The EMC Corporation was an American manufacturer of hardware and software with headquarters in Hopkinton , Massachusetts . EMC had offices in over 60 countries, such as Great Britain , Germany , France and Egypt . EMC specialized in storage systems for operators of large data centers in the enterprise area, software for document and content management (especially the Documentum product range) and backup solutions such as Avamar or DataDomain. Other important topics were virtualization , information security and big data . An EMC product, the Symmetrix VMAX , formed the basis of storage area networks in large data centers . The CLARiiON line of products joined EMC in 1999 with the acquisition of Data General . According to the Gartner Group, Documentum is a leading enterprise content management system.

On October 12, 2015 was Dell announced EMC for 67 billion US dollars to take over. This merger was implemented in September 2016. Company history

Richard Egan (2001), co-founder of EMC

Over the past 30 years, EMC has developed from a pure storage manufacturer to a provider of solutions for everything to do with information infrastructure. EMC was founded in August 1979 by Richard Egan , who previously worked at Intel , and his college friend Roger Marino in Newton, Massachusetts . They began selling computer furniture before successfully developing storage technology and becoming one of the most economically successful companies in the USA within a few years . EMC's flagship, the Symmetrix , was first presented in 1990.

Joseph M. Tucci has headed the company as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer since 2001. According to the American trade magazine eWeek, Tucci was ranked 7th in 2008 on the list of the most influential personalities in the IT industry. Under Tucci's leadership, EMC has systematically expanded its service portfolio in all areas of information infrastructure through investments in research and development as well as through strategic acquisitions of companies such as Documentum , VMware , RSA Security , Iomega and Mozy . EMC was named # 2 in the 2012 World's Most Admired Computer Companies by Fortune magazine . In July 2012, Microsoft named EMC "Search Partner of the Year".

EMC was the largest storage systems manufacturer in the world, with competitors such as IBM , NetApp , Hewlett-Packard, and Hitachi Data Systems .

On October 12, 2015, Dell announced the acquisition of the company for $ 67 billion. This was seen as the largest acquisition in the tech industry. The purchase was completed in September 2016.

company

The company name was originally an acronym for Egan-Marino-C ... Corporation formed from the first letters of the surname of the company's founders . The "C" comes from two former employees called Connelly and Curley, hence the "C" is written in the logo in the square, which aptly parallels the formula of Albert Einstein is. Joe Tucci pointed out in May 2012 at the in-house trade fair EMC World 2012 that the full company name is "EMC Corporation" and that the square is only used in the logo.

Products and Services

EMC offered a wide range of products from the areas of enterprise content management , storage area network , data backup , data recovery , archiving and information security . In addition, IT consulting , customer service , customer support and training were offered, as well as various EMC-specific certificates (Dell EMC Proven Professional program).

The EMC Academic Alliance was a training program from EMC Corporation , which is offered free of charge to universities, schools and other non-profit institutions worldwide. The first universities of applied sciences in Germany to join the program since 2008 are the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences , the Brandenburg University of Technology and the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences .

From EMC's point of view, the goal of this commitment is to close knowledge gaps between practice and teaching in the field of data storage and information management , as well as cloud infrastructure and service , data backup & data recovery and big data and thus better prepare students for their later professional lives. It is very important to EMC that the program is not intended to provide product knowledge, but rather technology knowledge.

The program currently comprises four curricula :

  • "Information Storage and Management"
  • " Cloud Infrastructure and Services"
  • "Backup and Recovery Architecture"
  • " Data Science and Big Data Analytics"
