Prato (Leventina) ( Lombard language : Prò , officially called Prato-Fiesso from 1902 to 1939 ) is a municipality in the Leventina district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The village of Prato is on the right side of the Leventina Valley at 1043 meters. The church of San Giorgio is located a little outside the village on a hill and with its Romanesque campanile dominates the entire upper valley up to Quinto . In a mountain basin in the west of the community lies at an altitude of 1851 m above sea level. M. the mountain lake Lago Tremorgio , which can be reached by cable car from the Rodi-Fiesso fraction.

The communities include Mascengo, Cortesopra, Rodi, Morasco, Fiesso Sopra and Fiesso Sotto or Corteflorino; ( Rodi-Fiesso ) lies on the valley floor of the Leventina and is today the most densely populated town in the municipality as well as the seat of all public institutions such as the community hall and the school. The municipality borders on Quinto to the north, Faido to the east, Dalpe to the south and Lavizzara to the west .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1211 under the name de Prato at the time . It appears as Vicinìa as early as 1237 and also included Dalpe until 1854; the village must have belonged to the rodaria of Quinto TI, Airolo and Bedretto .

A tower that, according to some sources, was built by Duke Filippo Maria Visconti is mentioned as early as 1397; before 1660 it was converted into a rectory. The place formed the center of a neighborhood ( vicinanza ), which included the Degagne Prato, Fiesso and until 1866 Dalpe.

The old Piottinostrasse passed near the village; A sust is mentioned here in 1350 . 1353-1354 a feud between Prato and Faido made the traffic so unsafe that the German merchants turned to the Archbishop Giovanni Visconti , who put an end to the dispute.

In 1341 Prato paid the basilicano to the provost church of Biasca , a levy whose meaning is not exactly known. In 1799 the village was the center of the Leventina uprising against the French troops.
