Primeval: New World is a Canadian science fiction - television series and a spin-off of the ITV1 series Primeval - Return Primeval , which aired from 2007 until 2012. As in Primeval , a team of scientists has to fight against animals from the past and the future, which travel through time to the present with the help of so-called anomalies. It premiered in Canada on October 29, 2012 on Space .

In February 2013 the series was discontinued.

action

Enterprising inventor and visionary Evan Cross has been searching for anomalies since meeting an Albertosaurus after the dinosaur killed his wife, Brooke. Evan blames himself for the death because he was dying to get into the empty warehouse where Brooke was killed. After Brooks death, he bought this property and founded the company Cross Photonics . In addition to his role as Managing Director of Cross Photonics , he continues to look for anomalies. Together with the predator expert and animal behavior expert Dylan Weir, he wants to investigate the appearance of prehistoric monsters in the present. They receive support from the security specialist Mac Rendell and the technology prodigy Toby Nance. Evan's oldest friend and business partner Ange Finch ensures that the expeditions are funded. They are also supported by Lieutenant Ken Leeds, head of Project Magnet, who used to work for the government agency looking for extraterrestrial life and investigating other phenomena. A laboratory in Evans' company Cross Photonics serves as the headquarters for the team .

During a mission the group is attacked by terror birds . You can defeat them and bring them back to their timeline. But Ken secretly takes a bird with him. Mac begins an affair with Samantha "Sam" Sedaris, a Cross Photonics employee , who is killed by a Lycaenops during an operation . Mac initially blames Evan for death, as it does not kill the prehistoric animals but brings them back to their time. He also learns that in a previous life he was a soldier in the military and worked for a group called ARC . Evan admits that on the day Brooke died, not only did the Albertosaurus come through the anomaly, but also a soldier who looked like Mac. He told him that he came from the future and that he had to make sure that the dinosaurs came back to their time. The soldier was attacked by the animal and died of his injuries. Evan hid the soldier in a freezer in a secret room at his company. Then Evan went to look for the soldier and found Mac in England. Evan made sure he didn't go to the military and instead offered him a job in his company. Mac is mad at Evan for believing that he stole his life. He then leaves the team.

At the same time, Evan and Ange get closer and the two become a couple. But Ange realizes that Evan still loves Brook. She quits her job and leaves Evan. A little later, Evan and Dylan are called to an operation in which a terror bird is up to mischief in a parking garage. The two recognize the animal from a previous case and wonder how it came into its own time - without the appearance of an anomaly. Dylan sees a military armband at the bird's foot. They confront Ken and he confesses that he did not send the bird through the anomaly, but showed it to his superior to prove the existence of primeval animals. He also admits that on behalf of Colonel Henderson Hall, he not only guarded the anomalies, but also passed through them to capture more prehistoric animals. The team is shocked and wants nothing more to do with Ken. Colonel Hall is mad too and now wants Evans anomaly detector. Toby barely manages to get this away before Hall's men search Cross Photonics and arrest Evan. At the same time, Dylan found a security card for a secret laboratory that Ken owned. Together with Mac, who was also captured by Hall's men, she breaks into the laboratory. They discover that the military are operating on the animals. However, the two are caught and taken to Hall. The team learns from Hall that the military wants to change the future and therefore needs the animals. Ange also returns and asks Evan to support the military with his inventions. This agrees after a threat from Hall, who wants to lock Dylan and Mac away for burglary forever. Ken Leeds is removed from the helm of Project Magnet and he himself is locked away. Colonel Hall then offers Ange the line, which she also accepts.

Despite Hall's surveillance, Evan's team continues to operate. When an anomaly is found in an old warehouse, the team is on their way. Toby wants to use this anomaly to check the new anomaly detector for its functionality and the duration of an anomaly. However, the device always gives different numbers, so it is assumed that the old work is interfering with the signal. In fact, this anomaly leads to a landscape where a lot of anomalies exist. In the old work they manage to chase a primeval scorpion through the anomaly again. Toby is stung while trying. Leeds, who thanks Ange belongs to Project Magnet again, shows up with his team and takes Toby to a hospital where she is treated by toxin experts. Since the poison of the scorpion is required for the antidote, Evan and Dylan, accompanied by Leeds, have to follow through the anomaly and the scorpion. When you are faced with the many anomalies, first go through the one that led to Cross Photonics six years ago. Evan now wants to prevent his wife from dying. Dylan sets out to find the correct anomaly on his own. When she arrives in the prehistoric world of the scorpion, she falls a pit and can only be freed by Evan, who has changed his mind. In a cave they actually manage to cut off the stinger from the scorpion. An earthquake caused the cave to collapse. Evan is locked up and so Dylan makes his way back alone. Meanwhile, Connor Temple and his team are chasing an Albertosaurus through a Chinatown. When a colleague of Connor disappears together with the Albertosaurus through an anomaly, Connor gets into the anomaly of the scorpion. Together with Dylan, who returns to rescue Evans, they free Evan and then go to the anomaly in which the Albertosaurus resides - to the time when Evans wife dies. Meanwhile, Toby gets the cure just in time. You save Connor's colleague and leave the anomaly. On the way back to their time they are stopped by Hall, who stuns the Albertosaurus and also takes it with him. Ange wants to prevent Brook from dying. However, Evan, Dylan, Mac and Connor decide not to change the past and chase the Albertosaurus through the anomaly. At the same time Connor goes back to his time. Since Mac saved Evan at the time, Mac also goes into the anomaly to save Evan's life six years ago. After the Albertosaurus comes through the anomaly again, it is killed by Evan. Suddenly all the anomalies start to go away, whereupon Evan and Dylan realize that they somehow changed something. The series ends with the two running through their anomaly.

production

Impossible Pictures' Tim Haines and Jonathan Drake announced that they already had plans for a spin-off that would extend beyond England. Since they previously signed a contract with BBC America in Los Angeles , the series was originally supposed to play in the United States. However, the series was forwarded to the Canadian television station Space TV . The spin-off is produced together with Omni Film Productions in Canada. Judy and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, known as Star Trek writers , are writing the scripts. With this they want to expand Primeval .

On September 15, 2011, it was announced that the series was set in Pacific Northwest Canada and would be filmed in Vancouver. It's supposed to be based on elements, story arcs and also some characters from the mother series, so Andrew Lee Potts will be a guest star in the first season.

The budget per episode is $ 2.5 million. This means that the total budget is higher than for all previous seasons of the original series. The storylines and characters will emerge from the original series. However, the new cast will be younger than the UK team. The story is said to be darker compared to the original series. In addition, more space should be given for relationships between the cast members.

In early March 2012 it was announced that Niall Matter would lead the series. A few days later, Sara Canning , Miranda Frigon , Crystal Lowe and others were hired to continue leading roles.

For the first season, 13 episodes were ordered, which were filmed from March 7 to July 18, 2012 in Vancouver .

On February 22, 2013, the broadcaster Space announced that it had canceled the series after one season because of disproportionately low audience ratings. It was not known at the time whether the series would be produced by the co-financiers.

Occurring animals

  • Albertosaurus : Episode 1 shows a flashback in which an Albertosaurus attacks and kills Brooke Cross, Evan's wife. The dinosaur was the first to come through an anomaly. In episode 13 he is pursued by Connor Temple and escapes into an anomaly. It becomes clear that it is the Albertosaurus that killed Brooke. After the past repeats itself, he is killed by Evan.
  • Pteranodon : A parachutist iskilledby this pterosaur in episode 1. Later, the pteranodon kidnaps a small child into its nest and fights a Utahraptor , which it kills but succumbs to its wounds. Also in episode 12/13 you can see a pteranodon in the background.
  • Utahraptor : Two Utahraptors come through an anomaly and attack two cyclists. Evan and Dylan Weir can bring you back in time. Because the anomaly closes early, the other raptor stays in the present. In a house he kills a friend of Evan's. Ultimately, the raptor is subject to a duel with a pteranodon, which he was able to kill.
  • Titanoboa : In episode 2, a giant snake attacks boats floating on the lake. The monster, initially mistaken for an eel, crawls on land and wants to attack a group of demonstrators. However, by generating loud noises, the animal can be lured back into the lake and disappears back into its time due to the anomaly.
  • Carnivorous Beetles : A two-pilot plane disappears due to an anomaly. Have Evan and Dylan bring her back. On the other side they actually find the plane, but are immediately attacked by countless beetles. The queen of the beetles, on the other hand, makes her way to the present. After both pilots have been killed, Evan and Dylan go back to the present and can send the queen back. An effective weapon against the beetles was fire.
  • Terror birds : A Titanis couple and their child come through the anomaly and find refuge in a former locomotive museum. On the way to the museum, the team is attacked by a Titanis. They also find the remains of a motorcyclist. In addition to the birds, two drug dealers who hide in the museum and grow hemp pose problems for the team. After the parent animals die, apparently only the young animal is brought back to its time - however, it becomes clear in episode 10 that the animal was abused in a laboratory for research purposes and runs amok after its escape until it is shot.
  • Lycaenops : A Therapsid attacks a girl during a student party who just manages to escape. The incident calls Evan's team on the scene. They manage to stun the animal and want to lock it up in a warehouse until the anomaly comes up again. However, the animal breaks out and kills Sam. A male Lycaenops appears later. Both are ultimately shot.
  • Daemonosaurus : A pack of Daemonosaurus come out of an anomaly and kill the night watchman of a department store. After the alpha animal is captured and returned to the anomaly, the entire pack follows.
  • Ornitholestes : These predatory dinosaurs kill a photographer in a forest and riot near a log cabin. In episode 11 you can see the corpse of one of the animals in a laboratory.
  • Pachycephalosaurus : The Pachycephalosaurus rages in the city center. When caught, he spits on Evan. This fluid poses major problems for the team, as Evan can no longer distinguish between appearance and reality. In episode 11, the violated corpse is discovered in a laboratory.
  • Triceratops : A young triceratops is filmed by skaters and the video is posted on the internet. This calls on Evan's team, who can guide the dinosaur back into the anomaly.
  • Meganeura : In episode 11, Dylan and Mac secretly break into a research lab. There they discover, in addition to the corpses of animals from previous episodes, a dead Meganeura specimen. The animals were brought to the laboratory by Ken Leeds.
  • Brontoscorpio : In episode 12, a Brontoscorpio rages in an old warehouse. When he is sent back to his time, he poisons Toby. So Evan and Dylan have to follow the animal to get to the poison, to make an antidote.

Representation of the primeval animals

The series is largely based on scientifically proven facts up to date. So the Utahraptor feathers were missed. The animals have their actual body size. However, assumptions that have not yet been substantiated are presented as facts. For example, the Brontoscorpio is said to have a poisonous sting and the ability to climb. The Lycaenops is also shown as an animal that climbs trees and lives like a big cat . In addition, the animals are portrayed as killers who only chase after people to kill them, as hardly any victim serves as food. Even the representation of the prehistoric world when the team go through anomalies is not always entirely understandable. It is said that the Brontoscorpio built pitfalls on land to catch prey. However, there was no animal in the Silurian that permanently inhabited the land.

Charisma

Canada and England

The first season of the series has been broadcast in Canada on Space TV since October 29, 2012. In England , it will be broadcast on Watch from January 8, 2013 .

Germany

After ProSiebenSat.1 Media had already expressed interest in the spin-off in September 2011, it announced its participation in the production in February 2012. The German-language first broadcast was shown by ProSieben Fun from March 31, 2013. In free TV, the series was broadcast on ProSieben from April 5, 2013 . The first broadcast of the series brought ProSieben bad ratings. The first two episodes only achieved a 6.9 and 9.6 percent market share in the target group. Episode 3 came to 12.0 percent. The total reach varied between 760,000 and 920,000 viewers. Even a week later, the ratings were still very weak and were 0.78 million and 3.4 percent of all viewers, and 0.62 million and 4.3 percent of all viewers for the second episode. Due to the persistently poor audience ratings, the series was shortened by a week and, from the tenth episode, was only shown on ProSieben on Saturday night.
