Life

Bracht was the son of the Düsseldorf lawyer Friedrich Bracht (1781–1855) and his wife Katharina Antoniette Salome von Dorsten (1782–1855), brother of the merchant Viktor Bracht, who emigrated to Texas in 1845, and nephew of the vest and arenberg clerk Franz Anton Bracht . He grew from 1,817 in Düsseldorf- Bilk and was a pupil of the Royal Grammar School Dusseldorf , which he left in Easter 1828 with distinction to law study. He took the subject at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn and at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich . In 1829 he became a member of the Germania Bonn fraternity , and in 1830 the Germania Munich fraternity , which at the time was in close contact with politically left-wing MPs and journalists and was known for its " Pole swarming ".

When the rumor circulated in 1833 that the Kingdom of Prussia would introduce the General Prussian Land Law in the Rhine Province , Bracht stepped up with a paper published in Düsseldorf in 1834 for the maintenance and further development of liberal norms, such as those still applicable to the Rhineland law in the Rhineland , to the public. Through "his participation in the highly treasonable fraternity in Munich" he came together with his brother Felix Franz Friedrich Bracht (1808–1882, emigrated to Texas in 1849), Karl Heinrich Brüggemann and others in the focus of demagogue persecution when he was auscultator in Prussian Civil service was. On September 2, 1834, an examining magistrate at the Berlin Court of Appeal issued a profile on Bracht. On August 4, 1836, the higher court sentenced him in absentia to twenty years of imprisonment. This also included the loss of the office of auscultator and the Prussian citizenship.

In 1834 Bracht had emigrated to safety. He had fled to Belgium and lived for a few years as a lawyer in Verviers , where in 1841 he married Rosalie Franziska "Rose" Zurstraßen (1819–1889), the daughter of the textile entrepreneur Joseph Heinrich Zurstraßen (1789–1868) and his wife Catherine "Louise" ( 1785-1871). The couple had two daughters and four sons, including the future painter Eugen Bracht , who was born in Morges on Lake Geneva in 1842 , when the father had entered the service of the Grand Ducal Hessian Lieutenant General Heinrich Graf von Oyen zu Fürstenstein (1771-1850).

His widow, Countess Maximiliana, born Countess Bertrand von Perusa (1786–1864), he followed in 1850 as a legal advisor and asset manager to Darmstadt. As the former chief stewardess of the Grand Duchess Luise , Countess Maximiliana had excellent relationships with the Darmstadt court , which also benefited Bracht. After her death in 1864, Bracht entered the service of Baron Philipp Wambolt von Umstadt (1828–1887), a chamberlain of the Hessian Grand Duke. Bracht maintained contacts with Darmstadt artists and was a member of the Darmstadt Art Association .

In addition to the aforementioned commitments, Bracht was also active as an entrepreneur. In 1855 he was operations director and shareholder of the Darmstadt gas works , the Darmstadt stock company for gas lighting, founded in 1853 . He was also a shareholder and representative of the engineering works and iron foundry Darmstadt AG . He was also one of the initiators of the Hessian Ludwig Railway in 1857 and of the founders of Bauverein AG in Darmstadt in 1864 . He was on the board of the building association from its founding until his death.
