Psychoanalytic journals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psychoanalytic journals and yearbooks are central media for psychoanalytic specialist communication. However, some of them are aimed at an audience that extends far beyond the circle of experts (e.g. the magazine Psyche ). This dual function was already apparent during Sigmund Freud's lifetime.

development

Freud initially published in medical journals. The first series of publications published by Freud, which offered the young psychoanalysis its own forum, were the writings on applied psychology , which appeared in 20 issues from 1907 to 1925.

In 1909, Deuticke in Vienna published the first volume of the yearbook for psychoanalytic and psychopathological research , which contained Freud's analysis of the phobia of a five-year-old boy ("little Hans"). Freud and Eugen Bleuler were the editors, the editor in charge was Carl Gustav Jung . In the “preliminary remarks of the editorial staff” Jung referred to the first congress of psychoanalysts, which had taken place in Salzburg in 1908 : “At this meeting it was recognized that the processing of the problems in question was already preparing to exceed the boundaries of the medical interest group, and There would be the need for a periodical expression, which could collect the previously widely scattered works in this direction. "

The Central Journal for Psychoanalysis , edited by Wilhelm Stekel , was published as the “official organ” of the International Psychoanalytic Association since 1910 . After Stekel left the psychoanalytic movement, but was not ready to give up control of the paper, Freud founded the International Journal for Medical Psychoanalysis in 1913 , which was renamed the International Journal for Psychoanalysis (IZP) in 1920 .

The view that psychoanalysis should by no means be limited to medical applications was taken into account in 1912 with the establishment of Imago as a “magazine for the application of psychoanalysis to the humanities”.

Freud attached great importance to independence. In 1919 the Internationale Psychoanalytische Verlag was founded, in which from then on, in addition to numerous books and the Almanac of Psychoanalysis, the periodical Die Psychoanalytische Movement (1929–1933) and the IZP appeared, and from 1926 also the journal for psychoanalytic pedagogy . This magazine was initially published by Heinrich Meng and Ernst Schneider . From the 5th year of 1931 on, Paul Federn , Anna Freud and AJ Storfer also belonged to the group of editors. In the course of 1932 Storfer resigned from the editorial office; it came August Aichhorn and Hans Zulliger added. From 1934 - with the editorial team remaining unchanged - Willi Hoffer took over the editorial management.

After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the Internationale Psychoanalytische Verlag was liquidated. As a successor to the Imago Sachs founded in the US in 1939 , the American Imago . In 1941, Karen Horney founded The American Journal of Psychoanalysis , so that neo- psychoanalysis now had its own periodical.

In 1945 Anna Freud , Ernst Kris and Heinz Hartmann founded The Psychoanalytic study of the child . The first volume contained an account with Melanie Klein .

In 1947 Alexander Mitscherlich , Felix Schottlaender and Hans Kunz founded the psyche . As the original subtitle “A yearbook for depth psychology and human studies in research and practice” suggests, the magazine was initially designed as a cross-school organ. Only since 1966 has the psyche been subtitled “Journal for Psychoanalysis and Its Applications”.

The diversity of the German-language psychoanalytic journals that appear today reflects the specialization that has also found its way within psychoanalysis.
