Purity Ring is a Canadian electro-pop band from Edmonton , Alberta , founded in 2010 . The band consists of singer Megan James and producer Corin Roddick. Her debut album Shrines was released in 2012.

Band history

James and Roddick were originally members of the indie rock band Gobble Gobble (later renamed Born Gold ). During a 2010 tour, drummer Roddick experimented with electronic beats and asked former pianist James to sing a few vocals for it. From this experiment, the future band's first song emerged: Ungirthed , released in January 2011.

In April 2012, Purity Ring announced that it had signed record deals with Last Gang Records (distribution in Canada) and 4AD (worldwide distribution). In the same month, their first single, Obedear, was released on these labels. On July 24th followed the debut album Shrines , which landed at number 32 on the Billboard 200 with 90,000 copies sold in the USA (until February 2015) . Pitchfork Media authors voted Shrines 24th out of the 50 best albums of 2012.

In March 2015, the group released their second album Another Eternity , which reached number 25 on the Canadian and number 26 of the American album charts.

The duo wrote and produced three tracks for Katy Perry's 2017 album Witness : Mind Maze , Miss You More and Bigger than Me .

For the five-year anniversary of Shrines , the band released the single Asido in July 2017 , which should not be on the upcoming album.

In November 2018 it was announced that the band had finished recording their third album.

Style, influence and production

Purity Rings productions are described as synth pop , dream pop , indie electronic, trip-hop and witch house , among others . According to some authors, the music contains elements from Dubstep , Chillwitch and Dutch House as well as influences from (early) hip-hop and a distinctive Roland TR-808 sound. The band itself uses the genre name "Future Pop". The duo is attributed a stylistic closeness to or influences from artists such as Grimes , Iamamiwhoami , Mantronix , Man Parrish , The Knife , AlunaGeorge , Portishead and especially the Cocteau Twins .

Pitchfork called Shrines a time capsule of the sound of 2012 and 2013.

Since Corin Roddick lived in Montreal and Megan James lived in Halifax for a few years until they moved back to Edmonton , the cooperation took place largely over the Internet. Roddick produced the beats and sent them via email to Halifax, about 1,300 miles away, or Edmonton, 3,600 km away, where James recorded the vocals and sent them back. Only Another Enternity was largely produced together in their hometown of Edmonton and recorded.

Purity Rings titles have been used in several TV productions and trailers.
