Qairat Nematuly Kelimbetow ( Kazakh Қайрат Нематұлы Келімбетов , Russian Кайрат Нематович Келимбетов Kairat Nematowitsch Kelimbetow * 28. January 1969 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR ) is a Kazakh economist and politician . Since December 2015 he has headed the International Finance Center Astana.

Life

Qairat Kelimbetow was born in Alma-Ata in 1969 . He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Cybernetics at Lomonosov University in Moscow in 1993 . In 1996 he received another degree from the Kazakh State Academy of Management and in 1998 he graduated from Georgetown University .

After graduating from Lomonosov University, he began his professional career as an assistant at Al-Farabi University . In 1996 he became a member of the High Economic Council of the Kazakh President. In the following year he moved to a managerial position at the Kazakh Agency for Strategic Planning, where, among other things, he was involved in drafting the “Kazakhstan 2030” development program. After only a year he returned to the administration of the President, where he became head of the Department of Social and Economic Inquiry. From 1999 to 2001 Kelimbetow was chairman of the Agency for Strategic Planning and between 2001 and 2002 he held the position of first deputy finance minister. In August 2002, he became a member of the Kazakh government as Minister of Economy and Budget. He held this position until April 20, 2006, before becoming chairman of the Fund for Sustainable Development. From January to October 2008 he headed the administration of the President and from October 2008 to April 2011 he was the chairman of the national fund Samruk Kazyna.

On April 11, 2011, he was again a member of the Kazakh government in the cabinet of Kärim Mässimow as Minister for Economic Development and Trade. He was dismissed from this post on January 20, 2012 and was subsequently appointed Deputy Prime Minister. On October 1, 2013, he was appointed President of the Kazakh National Bank . In August 2015, under his leadership, the National Bank announced that the exchange rate of the Kazakh currency tenge would be released, as a result of which the tenge had lost massively in value. As a result, Kelimbetov was dismissed as head of the National Bank on November 2, 2015.

Kelimbetow has been heading the International Finance Center Astana since December 2015.

Kelimbetow is married to Fatima Kelimbetowa. The couple have two children together.
