The Kvarner Bay ( Croatian Kvarner , Italian Quarnero / Quarnaro / Carnaro , ancient German Quarnerobusen ) is a bay on the upper Adriatic Sea in Croatia .
It lies between the Istrian peninsula in the west and the Croatian coast in the east.
The most important place on the Kvarner Bay today is the port city of Rijeka . Inhabited islands of the Kvarner Bay are Krk , Pag , Cres , Lošinj , Rab , Susak , Unije , Ilovik , Male Srakane and Vele Srakane . Numerous important and at the same time traditional tourist resorts, such as glamorous Opatija and Lovran, are located on its coasts . The Kvarnerland is also seen as the central area of the Croatian region Hrvatsko Primorje (Croatian coastal region) - a precise delimitation is unusual in this richly structured coastal landscape. It forms with the former Trieste Province of Italy and the Italian part of Istria ( Venezia Giulia ), the Slovenian Istria coast country / Primorska , the Croatian part of Istria ( Istria Istria) and the south in the Dalmatia was the northeast shoreline of the Adriatic, and the former from the High Middle Ages Until the 20th century, as part of the Habsburg monarchy, it was simply called Litorale , the coastal land .
The Kvarner Islands are the most northerly of the Croatian Archipelago , which stretches with the Montenegrin Islands to the Albanian border.
The Kvarner Bay itself is made up of the waters Kvarner, Kvarneric and the Velebit Canal . The sea area between the Istrian peninsula and the islands of Cres and Unije is called “the Kvarner” in the narrower sense. The Kvarnerić lies between Cres and Lošinj on the western side and the islands of Krk and Rab on the eastern side. The Velebit Channel lies between the islands of Krk and Rab and the mainland . Due to the frequency of the Bora and a local jet effect through the Velebit Mountains, which have a striking cut east towards the inland of the Balkans, this is one of the dangerous waters in the world.
A tourist specialty are viewing platforms located directly on the coast for sighting schools of tuna, called tuners here .
