The Quartetto di Cremona is a string quartet ensemble from Cremona founded in 2000 and is one of the most renowned string quartets in the world. The Quartetto di Cremona became famous for its performances of the entire string quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven .

The Quartetto di Cremona was founded in 2000 at the Accademia Walter Stauffer in Cremona. There they studied with Salvatore Accardo , Rocco Filippini and Bruno Giuranna . After a few changes on the second violin and the cello, the final line-up of the ensemble was found in 2002. This was followed by further studies and master classes at the Fiesole Music School with Piero Farulli from the Quartetto Italiano and at the European Chamber Music Academy with Hatto Beyerle from the Alban Berg Quartet . The Quartetto di Cremona has held the chair for quartet at the Accademia Walter Stauffer in Cremona since autumn 2011 and teaches at the Conservatorio Niccolò Paganini di Genova as well as master classes all over Europe

The Quartetto di Cremona performed at festivals in Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and the United States as the Perth International Arts Festival , the Beethoven Festival , the Turku Music Festival, the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry / Ireland, the Brighton Festival , the Festival van Vlaanderen in Brussels and at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival . Their concert activities have taken the musicians to international concert halls such as the Beethoven House in Bonn, the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles in Brussels, the Konzerthaus in Berlin , the Wigmore Hall in London, the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Italian Cultural Institute in Cologne , the Handelsbeurs Concertzaal in Ghent, the Auditorio Nacional Madrid and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

Her extensive repertoire ranges from the early quartets of Joseph Haydn to works by Anton Webern , Beethoven and Mozart to works of classical modernism such as Wolfgang Rihm and Helmut Lachenmann , with a particular interest in contemporary works by Italian composers such as Luciano Berio , Lorenzo Ferrero , Luigi Nono and Fabio Vacchi .

In 2011 the Quartetto di Cremona published the complete quartets by Fabio Vacchi .

As artist in residence with the Italian chamber music society, the Società del Quartetto , the Quartetto di Cremona performed and recorded all of Ludwig van Beethoven's quartets from 2011 to 2014. From 2012 the ensemble was also Artist in Residence at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

The Quartetto di Cremona has won many important awards at major international string quartet competitions such as a second prize at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition , a second prize at the Vittorio Gui International Chamber Music Competition , and was winner of the Vittorio Veneto Competition and winner of the Cremona International Competition and is the winner of the International Web Concert Hall Competition . In 2002 the ensemble received the Franco Gulli Award as the best Italian chamber music ensemble and in 2005 the Quartetto the Cremona received the Borletti - Buitoni Trust Foundation Fellowship. The specialist magazine Pizzicato honored the quartet with the Supersonic Award and nominated it for the International Classical Music Award (ICMA) 2015. The Quartetto di Cremona received 5 stars ( 5 stars ) from the BBC Music Magazine and the city of Cremona honored the artists with honorary citizenship . In 2017 the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik for the CD recording of the Beethoven string quartets in the chamber music recording of the year category.

The Quartetto di Cremona is currently funded and supported by the Peter Eckes Culture Fund .

In 2016 the Quartetto di Cremona will arrange the entire quartets of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and present them in Turin and Naples. In summer 2016 the Quartetto di Cremona will perform the entire Beethoven cycle again at the Norwich Festival .

Instrumentation and instruments

The Quartetto di Cremona plays on historical instruments, on loan from the Peter Eckes Culture Fund .

From September 2017 to September 2018 the Quartetto di Cremona plays the so-called “ Paganini Quartet ”. The instruments have been made available to renowned string quartet ensembles by the Nippon Music Foundation since 1994 .
