Quilmes is a place in the province of Buenos Aires in eastern Argentina . It has 230,810 inhabitants and is the capital of the Partido Quilmes , which has a total of around 520,000 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ) and is located on the banks of the Río de la Plata . Quilmes is now part of Gran Buenos Aires .
The name of the city is reminiscent of the Quilmes Indian tribe , who originally lived in the north-west of the country, were deported here by the Spaniards in the colonial times and virtually died out.
Until the 1980s, the city was the seaside resort of the residents of Buenos Aires , but then the heavy pollution of the river prevented its further use as a holiday center. Today the city is best known for its beer brewery . The Quilmes brewery was founded by German immigrants at the end of the 19th century and is now the most commercially successful in Argentina.
Quilmes is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Quilmes .
