history

The first documentary mention was made in 1172 as "villa Quilowe", when Duke Bogislaw I transferred the village to the Stolpe monastery . The Slavic name is interpreted as "lamentation". In 1194, Siegfried I, Bishop of Cammin , transferred the bishop's tithe from Quilow and other places to the monastery .

The von Owstin family , who had their ancestral home in the Owstin estate of the same name near Gützkow, came into possession of the town of Quilow at the end of the 15th century. 1485 Quilow was named in a feudal letter from Duke Bogislaw X. for Hans and Claus von Owstin. In 1499 the Owstine bought a farm in Quilow from the Stolpe Monastery. In the second half of the 16th century a fortress house was built in Quilow and surrounded by a moat, which was later expanded in the style of a castle in the Renaissance style .

In the Swedish times Quilow belonged to the Wolgast district. In the description of the property, which was made in 1694 for the Swedish Land Registration of Western Pomerania , ten residential buildings were counted next to the manor house. A water mill , which, like the moat, was fed by a stream flowing to the Peene, no longer existed around 1800. Instead, a windmill was built, but it was demolished before 1880. The second, larger watermill near Stolpmühl was in operation until after 1920. In the middle of the 19th century, the mining of peat in the meadows of the Peene Valley was an important source of income for the estate. Every year around 3500 fathoms - around 11,500 cubic meters - of peat were cut.

From 1818 Quilow belonged to the Prussian district of Greifswald in the administrative district of Stralsund . After the extinction of the male line of Owstins on Quilow with August Philipp von Owstin († 1855) the estate came to inheritance disputes in 1858 by a comparison of the third daughter Sophia Carolina Friederike, wife of the landscape Council Carl Heinrich von Ploetz. Until the expropriation in 1945, Quilow was owned by the von Ploetz family .

With the municipal law of May 1, 1935, the formation of the large community (administrative community) Quilow from the existing communities Schlatkow , Lüssow and Quilow with the following locations: Owstin, Pentin, Lüssow, Paetschow, Vitense, Schmatzin, Groß Polzin, Schlatkow, Groß Jasedow, Quilow, Wolfradshof arranged, but there were no incorporations. This regulation was suspended after 1945.

The moated castle Quilow , which served as a residential building, LPG canteen and community office in GDR times, was restored in 1959 as a monument to the Middle Ages. It threatened to deteriorate after the turnaround and the vacancy. In 2007 it was sold to a foundation that wanted to carry out a model project for restoration here. So far, the building has been partially secured using a "steel corset". Modern extensions (e.g. LPG kitchen) were also torn down.

The district of Stolpmühl, which only consists of two farms, belongs to Quilow. There was a watermill on the road to Peene and Stolper Ferry, which operated from the 18th century until after 1920. Above the mill and on the way to the Peene there were extensive ski jumping facilities during the Swedish times, which are shown on a Swedish map from 1759.
