The RN Roma was an Italian steam-powered liner of the Regia Marina . It was the fourth and last ship of the Regina Elena class to be built and the second warship of the Italian Navy named after the capital Rome .
history
The Roma was put under construction in 1903 at the La Spezia naval arsenal , the launch took place in 1907 and after 5 years of construction it was put into service in 1908.
It was considered an excellent unit with very balanced properties, but due to the long construction time it was already outdated when it was commissioned by the battleships with standard caliber of the dreadnought type .
Like her three identical sister ships RN Regina Elena (type ship), RN Vittorio Emanuele and RN Napoli , she had a steel hull with 250 mm thick side armor and 100 mm deck armor. The command tower had an armor of 250 mm and the two heavy turrets, each with a single 30.5 cm cannon, a maximum of 350 mm. Two triple expansion steam engines with a total of approx. 20,000 hp were used as the drive, enabling a top speed of 22 knots . The range of around 10,000 nautical miles was particularly remarkable .
After several years of monitoring the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea , it was used after voyages as escort for merchant ships with their three sister ships both in the Italo-Turkish War from 1912 to 1913 and in the First World War .
In 1927, long overtaken by the later-built battleships with standard caliber, it was decommissioned and demolished shortly afterwards.
The Roma from 1908 was - with the ships of the Regina Elena class - the last Italian liner to be built. The successor was the Dante Alighieri class with a standard caliber , which entered service from 1913 .
commitment
During the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-12 she took with her sister ships, among them the Vittorio Emanuele as flagship , in the occupation of Tobruk and Benghazi in Libya as well as in the operations in the Aegean Sea and the conquest of Rhodes and the Dodecanese part. Later on, the Roma took part in the attacks in the Dardanelles with their artillery with said ships and thus in the preparation of the inter-Allied landing against the territory of the Ottoman Empire itself. At the end of the war, the Roma were in Constantinople with other Allied warships .
During the First World War , it operated several times between Taranto , Brindisi , Valona and the Aegean Sea , but had little contact with the enemy due to the destruction of most of the Ottoman ships.
