history

At the turn of the century, the region was marked by a shortage of money and an emergency in agriculture. A loan association based on the principle of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen appeared to be an opportunity to alleviate the plight of those affected and to counter the burgeoning money and interest rate . True to the motto: “What one can't do, many can do that”, Mayor Friedrich Gerhardt (Oberelsungen) took the initiative to found the “ Ober-Elsunger Loan-Kassen-Verein” . The first general assembly took place on February 8, 1881, with four other "association heads" and nine " board members" .

Between 1881 and 1923, further cooperatives were founded in almost all the places in today's business area.

The first cooperative bank was founded on January 15, 1920 in Wolfhagen, today's headquarters of the bank. In 1971, Wolfhagen took over the Raiffeisenkassen from Nothfelden, Altenhasungen and Wenigenhasungen, whose founding dates go back to the years 1887 to 1891. The Raiffeisenbank Weidelsburg, founded in 1964 from the Raiffeisenbanks Bründersen, Ippinghausen and Altenstädt, joined Raiffeisenbank Wolfhagen in 1979.

At its meeting in September 1987, the general assembly of Raiffeisenbank Ahnatal eG approved the merger agreement and thus the transfer of business to Raiffeisenbank eG, Calden. The Raiffeisenbank Ahnatal eG was founded on March 11, 1892 as the Weimar Loan Banks Association eGmbH with its headquarters in Weimar.

Only one year later, in 1988, the Raiffeisenbank Emstal handed over its business to Raiffeisenbank Wolfhagen eG following a resolution by the general assembly. As the next credit union, Raiffeisenbank Grebenstein eG was merged into Raiffeisenbank eG, Calden, via a merger agreement of September 1990. The Raiffeisenbank Grebenstein eG reached back to the Grebensteiner Loan Fund Association founded on January 21, 1895.

Raiffeisenbank Landau eG, founded in 1888, merged with Raiffeisenbank Wolfhagen eG in 1991.

In June 1998, the meeting of representatives paved the way for the next merger, Raiffeisenbank eG, Calden: the takeover of Raiffeisenbank Diemel-Warmetal eG based in Liebenau. The history of the former Raiffeisenbank Diemel-Warmetal eG began in November 1922 with the establishment of the Niedermeiserer savings and loan association eGmuH.

Another year later, in 1999, the Raiffeisenbank Breuna-Zierenberg eG and Raiffeisenbank Wolfhagen eG merged to form the new Raiffeisenbank eG based in Wolfhagen. In 2014, Raiffeisenbank Trendelburg eG, founded in 1896, joined Raiffeisenbank eG in Calden.

The meeting of representatives of the Raiffeisen banks in Calden and Wolfhagen in June 2015 paved the way for the last merger to date. On January 1, 2016, the joint business began, initially under the company name Raiffeisenbank eG, Wolfhagen. Since August 2017 the bank has been operating as Raiffeisenbank HessenNord eG.
