Life

Gut Straß dance hall

Rainer Devens was born in 1938 in Breslau, Silesia. In 1945 his parents fled with him to Bachmehring near Wasserburg in Bavaria. Devens painted and drew from childhood. He attended high school in Wasserburg and then did a craft training. Later he did a commercial job. He began his artistic career around 1972 as an autodidact in self-study fine arts . Since 1982 Devens has been a member of the artist group Arbeitskreis 68 (AK68) in Wasserburg. From 1983 he showed his work in solo and group exhibitions. Between 1989 and 2001 he was a member of the board of AK68. Occasionally he was a member of the jury.

In 2001 Devens set up a studio in Gut Straß near Wasserburg, where he still organizes exhibitions today. From 2009 to 2010 he played a key role in the restoration and furnishing of the historic dance hall in Gut Straß. His paintings can also be seen in these rooms today.

Starting from landscape and city views, Devens has increasingly devoted himself to the subject of the house since the 1980s . He often translates his thoughts into excerpts. In his paintings and drawings he also gives an insight into the history of the house and town. His works not only reveal individual Wasserburg buildings and facades, but also illustrate the typical Inn-Salzach architecture and medieval urban planning , for which the city of Wasserburg is exemplary. In addition, his painter's book with the title Wasserburger Houses with pictures and texts was published in 2000 .

Since the 2000s, Devens has been concerned with the relationship between house and person in his work cycle House Thoughts in increasingly abstract and symbolic paintings. In the pictures, the complex meaning of the house for people is treated as the first and last place, as a home and cage, as a place of retreat, but also as a stage. His works describe the tension between the individual and society, which is also reflected in the architecture. For many of his paintings, Devens chose the color red with its warm tones, which occasionally enabled a glimpse into the innermost part of the house.

His wide-ranging work also includes portrait art in drawings and paintings and the representation of technical details. In addition, he tries to make music and its effect pictorial. In 2008 he created the picture series Winterreise for Franz Schubert 's song cycle of the same name . Devens is also active as a sculptor and participated with his works Resonanz and Im Forst da the houses grow on the sculpture paths in Wasserburg and in the Ebersberger Forst.
