Spaceship Promet
Spaceship Promet was in 1971-1974 in Andromeda or Astro-Verlag Cologne published German science fiction - pulp novel series . Since 1999 a sequel in the form of several sub-series has been published by Blitz-Verlag, now in paperback format or as an e-book .
Original series (Andromeda and Astro Verlag)
The series was conceived by the SF magazine novelist Kurt Brand , who had previously worked on the Perry Rhodan and Ren Dhark series and who wrote a considerable part of the novels in the series as well as initially the synopsis . The series represented an ambitious attempt to contrast the extremely successful Perry-Rhodan series with an alternative in terms of content. Therefore, the focus should not be on space empires and space battles, but on the peaceful exploration of space. Accordingly, the protagonists are not "leaders of humanity" and there is no galactic politics, but the exploration of the stars is first of all a private undertaking. Unlike Perry Rhodan, sexuality also plays a certain role and there is a female protagonist, which was unusual in German science fiction at the time.
The starting point of the plot is the planet Moran, inhabited by a human-like race, on which the survivors of an attack by the "black spacers" hide in an underground cave system. The race is on the verge of extinction and with the last remaining resources a faster than light spaceship is being built, which is supposed to go in search of a new home. In ancient scriptures a life-friendly planet inhabited by hordes of primitive savages is mentioned. The expedition manages to find the planet. As it turns out, the savages have now evolved and the planet Earth is on the cusp of the 22nd century. A catastrophe occurs on the approach to earth, which only Arn Borul survives, who is found by Peet Orell, the son of the head of the powerful HTO corporation. The existence of a member of an extraterrestrial race is initially kept secret and with the help of Arn Borul's technical knowledge, a small spaceship with super-light drive is built, the "Promet". Together with Borul, Peet Orell and his friends Jörn Callaghan and Vivien Raid (an attractive, technically gifted and very self-confident woman) go in search of the planet Moran. However, its coordinates were lost when Borul's ship crashed. An odyssey begins in space, on which one finds traces of the destruction caused by the black spacers everywhere. It turns out that the black spacecraft are manned by robots. Their masters, the Cyclops, have become victims of a pathological change. After you have finally found the planet Moran and the survivors have been saved, you set out to destroy the bases of the black robot ships, but the Promet is irreparably damaged. A new, now larger ship is being built, the Promet II, and the exploration of the galaxy continues, "from star to star," as the series subtitled.
Also due to the various breaks in the history of the publication and changes in the group of authors, Raumschiff Promet did not have large cycles - as was the case with Perry Rhodan - that spanned dozens of issues, but rather a few smaller cycles, repeatedly interrupted by individual novels. A peculiarity of the narrative structure in the volumes written by Brand was that there were several parallel storylines that extended over several booklets.
Like Brand, most of the other authors had experience in novel and book loan books . The authors with multiple titles were:
author | Pseudonym (s) | notebooks |
---|---|---|
Kurt Brand | Peter L. Starne | 19th |
Gisela Friebel | GS Friebel | 2 |
Ronald M. Hahn | IS East, Daniel Monroe | 5 |
Peter Theodor Krämer | PT Hooker | 3 |
Hans Peschke | Peter Hansen | 15th |
Hermann Werner Peters | Staff Caine, Bert Stranger | 11 |
Gudrun Voigt and Karl Voigt | Georg P. Gray | 3 |
The cover pictures of the first nine issues were line drawings, from issue 10 they switched to colored SF illustrations in the manner of the Perry-Rhodan covers, which were designed for the first time in issue 22 and from the 30s onwards by Manfred Schneider .
The series of spaceship Promet adventures originally appeared in the science fiction science fiction series of Andromeda Verlag. Not all of the titles in this series were spaceship Promet adventures, which appeared with the subtitle Arn Borul - From Star to Star , from issue 21 as Spaceship Promet: Arn Borul - From Star to Star . Up to issue 20, other titles with even numbers without any connection with spaceship Promet appeared in alternation . The commercial success of the series left a lot to be desired and after the bankruptcy of Andromeda Verlag it was continued from issue 27 by Astro Verlag in the Astro Sonderband series . After Kurt Brand, who held the rights to Spaceship Promet , was no longer paid by the publisher and refused to publish more manuscripts, the series was continued against Brand's will. Since there had been no more continuous storyline, especially since Brands left, the plan was to give the series a cycle structure again and - due to the legal disputes between the publisher and Brand - to change the name Raumschiff Promet to Raumschiff Titan and the protagonists largely to be exchanged. But that didn't happen. The series was abruptly discontinued with volume 65 - the first volume of the planned cycle.
To be continued by Blitz-Verlag
After two attempts to revive the series failed in the early 1990s, the Blitz-Verlag acquired the rights in 1996, which initially reissued the spaceship Promet adventures of the original series in 1999 in the series Raumschiff Promet - Classics , now not in booklet form , but as paperbacks, with an average of four issues appearing in a paperback. But it did not stop at new editions. Thomas Ziegler and Ronald M. Hahn wrote exposés for a sub- series that appeared in 12 volumes from 1999 to 2001 under the title Spaceship Promet - New Adventure . Another sequel series Titan Star Adventures appeared in 20 volumes from 2002 to 2007, with Thomas Ziegler, Manfred H. Rückert and Jörg Kaegelmann , the owner of the Blitz-Verlag (under the pseudonym SHA Parzzival) writing the synopsis. Another sub-series Star Voyager - A Titan Star Adventure based on an idea by EC Tubb was published in 10 volumes from 2009 to 2014 in a more sophisticated presentation as an "exclusive collector's edition". The sub-series The Adventures of Shalyn Shan , launched in 2014, continued the adventures of Shalyn Shan, the commander of the spaceship Titan and protagonist of Star Voyager , and was published in e-book form, with the first 10 volumes being new editions of the Star Voyager volumes. At the same time, the sub-series Von Stern zu Stern has been published since 2013 , also as an e-book from volume 6.
