Reality XL is a German feature film by director and author Tom Bohn from 2012 . The Mystery - Thriller of vanished Scientists in particle accelerator LHC is a chamber drama staged. The entire action takes place in three rooms and an inner courtyard.

Professor Konstantin Carus is preparing for a speech the next day in his study. Irritated, he rejects his wife, who tries to persuade him to stop his work for the evening. He should take it easy, his doctor said.

He then finds himself in a ground station for communication with communications satellites. Antoine, who is later introduced as the recorder, drives Carus, who is sitting in a wheelchair, into the interrogation room, where he starts up a very outdated computer nicknamed "Monsieur Tik-Tak". There is a red blood-like stain on the floor of the room. Antoine explains that this is plum jam. His mother dropped a jam jar two weeks ago. In disbelief, Carus tests the stain in an unobserved moment and realizes that this is indeed plum jam.

A short time later, the policewoman Sophia Dekkers enters the room, followed a few minutes later by the public prosecutor Robin Spector. Spector appears with a walking stick and a thin mustache and looks as if he came from a long past decade. When Carus stated that the invitation had announced a larger group of representatives from foreign embassies, he was informed that these were connected via Antoine's computer. Investigators can also dispel his doubts about her identity.

During the survey, they then present videos showing how 24 scientists enter the control room of the LHC in Geneva. At the end of the shift, however, only Carus leaves the room. Carus admits he made his colleagues disappear. During the shift he recognized in the data from the experiments that reality was just a dream of his, which he could manipulate at will. His colleagues did not believe him, so he made them "non-existent". Spector and Dekkers then decide to send him for a psychological examination, but continue the questioning, waiting for a necessary call back.

In an adjoining room, Carus von Dekkers and Spector are presented with pictures of his 23 colleagues who have disappeared. Dekkers repeatedly confuses people in the pictures and is corrected by Carus. Meanwhile, Carus is staring discreetly at Dekkers' bottom. When reading out an excerpt from the transcript, Antoine also mentions this look. Carus demands that this be deleted from the protocol. It didn't happen, and Antoine couldn't even see it because he wasn't in the room. He is denied this request on the grounds that Antoine logs everything that happens and not just what is spoken.

Spector tells Carus to prove his ability to manipulate the world by making an expensive fountain pen disappear. After a moment of tension, Carus explains that he doesn't want to make beautiful things disappear, which triggers the expected ridicule on the part of the investigators. However, after Dekkers and Spector have turned away briefly, Carus puts the pen in an all impressive state of suspension.

The situation now comes to a head and Carus suddenly decides to let Spector suffer from asthma. The asthma attack intensifies so much that Spector has to leave the control room and suffocates in the courtyard. Carus now decides not to be paralyzed any longer and gets up from the wheelchair to get Dekkers, whom he obviously has an eye on, to a passionate tango.

Spector comes back to life in the courtyard. He re-enters the control room and Carus immediately slumps to the floor - his paralysis has returned. Dekkers and Spector now explain to him what really happened in the control room of the LHC. He died of a heart attack and has now been examined on an intermediate level. He will now be locked away pending a final verdict. In the room that previously had 23 collages with pictures of his disappeared colleagues and their families, there is now only one with pictures of him. Despite violent protests from him, he is trapped by Spector.

He wakes up at home with a scream. His wife, who had not been seen before, reassures him. She resembles Dekkers except for the fact that she wears her blonde hair loose instead of an updo . After Carus tells her about the dream, she asks him where he got the new fountain pen on his desk - it's the fountain pen from the interrogation room.

With a zoom out , which begins with the focus on the fountain pen, the camera moves further and further away from the earth until the film finally fades out black to manifest itself anew as part of the screen of "Monsieur Tik-Tak". One last long shot shows Antoine staring seriously into the camera while he is typing incessantly. Immediately before the end credits, Antoine's expression changes to a knowing smile.

For the production of Reality XL, director and producer Thomas Bohn took out two life insurance policies. His goal was to make an independent film on a professional level. He succeeded in convincing the well-known actor Max Tidof with his script , with Heiner Lauterbach and Annika Blendl other well-known actors pledged their support. Most of the team worked on deferral , so they only get paid when the film has recouped production costs.

The film was shot in the Raisting earth station .

Parallel to the production of the film, Bohn documented the project in a blog. There he enabled insights into the film trade that are otherwise reserved for only a few. He presented the process of scriptwriting, the casting, the location search, arrangements with the fire brigade, shooting preparations, the shooting, the post-production and much more.

The film was released in theaters without distribution . In addition to several arthouse cinemas, Bohn was also able to win the Cinestar chain, which was showing Reality XL in some of its largest theaters. Overall, the film started in 21 cinemas across Germany, including some Cinemaxx and UCI cinemas.
