Red Faction - Die Rebellen , (Original title: Red Faction: Origins ) is an American science fiction film from 2011, which was directed by Michael Nankin . It is based on the Red Faction computer game series by THQ and continues the story of the game Red Faction: Guerrilla .

The television film was first broadcast on June 4, 2011 on the American channel Syfy .

background

The film plays like the games in the Red Faction series on Mars . Colonists colonized Mars and started terraforming the planet . But the planet was under the control of the Earth Forces (EDF), which brutally suppressed and exploited the colonists. Under the leadership of Alec Mason, the Red Faction resistance movement, together with the wild Marauders, finally succeeded in driving the EDF off Mars and gaining independence.

After the victory, Mason married the resistance fighter Samanya and they had a son and a daughter. Fifteen years after the liberation of Mars, unknown soldiers broke into the Masons' home, killed Samanya, and kidnapped their daughter Lyra. The Marauders were believed to be the perpetrators and Lyra to be dead.

action

The plot of the film begins 25 years after the liberation of Mars. Alec Mason became an alcoholic after the death of his wife and daughter and fell deeply. His son Jake is now a lieutenant in the Red Faction military and has to arrest him in a bar fight.

The wreck of the Earth battleship Hydra, which was destroyed by Mason in the last battle of the struggle for independence on the approach to Mars, falls from orbit and hits the no man's land between the territories of the colonists and the Marauders. Jake Mason is sent there with a unit to recover valuable technology. The technician Tess accompanies him. While the soldiers find the bodies of killed Marauders, Jake comes across a group of white-clad soldiers in the wreckage who are hauling away a device. When he attacks one of them, the soldier turns out to be a young woman. Jake is convinced that it is his sister Lyra.

Back in the settlement of Eos, he tries to convince his father and his superiors that he has found Lyra, but nobody believes him. So he decides to return to the wreck on his own. He is accompanied by Tess, who wants to recover more of the EDF technology. Jake leaves Tess on the way and at night comes across the two Marauders Corvallis and Leo, who reluctantly join him. The three of them head to the Asimov Sector, a lawless outpost. There they not only meet Tess, but can also trace the white-clad soldiers. Tess also finds out that the stolen device from the Hydra is part of a nuclear reactor.

The soldiers' trail leads to the Mädler Crater , where they discover a secret EDF base. Jake and Tess are captured and meet Lyra, who actually turns out to be Jake's missing sister. The EDF then suffered many losses as a result of an epidemic and therefore stole children from the colonists. She was told that her family was killed in an accident and that she was found injured by the EDF. Even after meeting Jake, she still believes this story. After Tess is shot, Jake has to escape with the help of Corvallis and Leo without a lyre.

The EDF then accelerated its plans and launched a battleship that had been hidden under the surface of Mars for many years. Protected from detection by the Red Faction, they fire at the settlement of Eos, where this is viewed as an attack by the Marauders. Jake arrives at Eos shortly afterwards, but no one wants to believe that this was just a deception by the EDF to provoke a war. He is arrested as a deserter, but is soon able to flee with the Marauders and his father. Together they steal a shuttle and shortly afterwards find the EDF battleship, which is hiding in a deep trench in front of the location. An attack on the Marauders is being prepared to finally start a war.

Jake, Corvallis and Leo board the battleship to rescue Lyra. In the meantime, she begins to remember her childhood and to doubt the history of the EDF. When the EDF commander realizes that she suspects the truth, he tries to kill her. A fight ensues in which Lyra and Jake finally kill the commander together. They flee from the battleship with the help of the shuttle, but are shot at and have to make an emergency landing. The EDF is now targeting one of the terraforming devices, the destruction of which would mean the end of the air supply for the colonists and Marauders. Your last chance to prevent this is to steer the damaged shuttle into the battleship and thus destroy it. Alec Mason takes on this task. After saying goodbye to his children over the radio, he flies the shuttle into the battleship and sacrifices himself to save colonists and Marauders.

Soon after, the leaders of the Red Faction and the Marauders meet in Eos. Jake proposes a new alliance between the two groups, a joint organization to protect all Martians. Leo, who now turns out to be the son of the matriarch of the Marauders, joins him. And Tess also becomes a member of Jake's new team. Then Jake brings Lyra home for the first time in many years.

production

The film was part of a partnership between the television station Syfy and the games company THQ . For Syfy, the film was part of a corporate strategy to expand the Syfy Games division, which u. a. Computer games published based on Syfy productions. Syfy Games also co-produced the next installment in the Red Faction series, Red Faction: Armageddon . For THQ, the film was part of a corporate strategy to expand their successful game franchises to other media.

The film was produced by Universal Cable Productions and UFO Films . THQ itself is not involved in the production costs.

The film was officially announced by THQ and Syfy in July 2010. The script was written by Andrew Kreisberg based on a story developed by Danny Bilson and Paul DeMeo . Kreisberg also acted as the film's producer.

When casting the actors, care was taken to engage familiar faces from the science fiction field. Robert Patrick became known as the T-1000 in Terminator 2 , Brian J. Smith played Lieutenant Scott in the Syfy television series Stargate Universe from 2009 to 2010 , and Kate Vernon had a bigger role than Ellen Tigh in the hit Syfy series Battlestar Galactica . The shooting took place in January 2011 in Bulgaria. A huge old steel hut from Soviet times was used as the backdrop for the colonist settlement of Eos . In addition, nearby caves could be used for further recordings. The spaceships and other locations were realized using CGI .

For budget reasons, one had to forego the implementation of the most famous aspect of the game series - the lavishly staged destruction of buildings and their surroundings. During production they worked a lot with concept drawings of the game so that the film and the games look as similar as possible. So is z. B. the architecture of a bar in the first film scene is identical to the game. Spaceships and weapons were also taken from the game. For other aspects where the team's ideas were different from the games, it was decided to follow their own ideas.

Red Faction: Origins was designed as a pilot for a potential series.

criticism

Mark A. Perigard of the Boston Herald was surprised by the quality of the film compared to other Syfy productions. He describes how the film enhances a well-known plot with brisk dialogues, reasonably experienced actors and occasional surprises. He was also surprised by the relatively low level of violence in a production based on a third-person shooter . It awards the grade "B" (corresponds to the grade "2", see school grades in the USA )

Ben PerLee is also positive about the film on GameZone . He praises the portrayal of Robert Patrick as Alec Mason and the special effects. He compares the quality of Red Faction: Origins to the television series Battlestar Galactica . PerLee describes the production as "solid" and considers it a good decision that the film tells its own story instead of adapting the plot of a game.

IGN's Jim Vejvoda is also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the film, given the number of bad movies based on video games . While the plot elements should be known to Vejvoda genre fans, the film convinces him with the convincing and serious performance. He particularly praises the portrayals of Smith and Patrick. He describes Merchant's portrayal of the lyre as reserved and considers the character Tess to be annoying. For Vejvoda, the film manages to overcome its apparently limited budget and the all-too-familiar plot to offer entertaining, if predictable, entertainment. It awards a grade of 6.5 out of 10 points (“Okay”).
