Reformed Church Uster

The Reformed Church of Uster is one of the most important transverse churches of Swiss classicism and is a listed building.

history

The village of Uster experienced a considerable boom in the course of the industrialization of the Zurich Oberland at the beginning of the 19th century . The associated increase in the number of inhabitants required the renovation of the church, which had existed since the Middle Ages . Construction of the new church began in 1822 according to plans by the architect Johannes Volkart and was completed in 1828 with the completion of the tower.

Exterior

The church is designed as a transverse church and modeled on the reformed church in Wädenswil . This applies to the appearance of the outer structure as well as the interior. In contrast to the baroque church of Wädenswil , however, the formal language is clearly assigned to classicism. The church rises on a hill below Uster Castle . Access is via a monumental flight of stairs . The transverse church has a massive portico made up of four columns in Tuscan order , which is in front of a risalit . In addition to the three portals of the main façade , the church can also be entered via side portals with smaller signs and via the gallery entrances on the tower side. The tower with its pointed spire and curved eyelashes for the tower clock is reminiscent of the church of Horgen .

inner space

The interior of the church is a transverse sermon hall with a large U- gallery and a baptismal font at the intersection of the aisles. The reference to the Wädenswil church is clearly visible here. On the tower wall there is a two-story pulpit , which was designed by Heinrich Bräm in the classicist style, as a visual reference point for the room .

The entire interior of the church is dominated by high round arched windows and Corinthian pilasters , which are decorated with an ornamental entablature with a serrated frieze . The ceiling stucco by Gotthard Geisenhof , which is divided into three cartouches , has a simple, classicist design language.
