The building of the government of Upper Bavaria on Maximilianstrasse in Munich houses the government of Upper Bavaria and the Aviation Office of Southern Bavaria, the aviation authority for the administrative districts of Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria and Swabia.

Architecture and history

The representative building with its 180 meter long and up to 29 meter high terracotta facade was built between 1856 and 1864 as part of the construction of Maximilianstrasse by the architect Friedrich Bürklein in the neo-Gothic , so-called Maximilian style, which is characteristic of the street . The client was King Maximilian II , who wanted a suitably representative building for the then Royal District Government of Upper Bavaria . Previously, the authority was housed in the old landscape building. The foundation stone was laid on November 28, 1856, the king's 45th birthday.

In 1944 the building was largely destroyed by bombing. Behind the historic, listed facade of the building, the interior was gutted and rebuilt with new floor plans and changed storey heights. The central spiral staircase of the new building is now a listed building. The window arrangements were also changed in accordance with the new floor plan and simplified in the 1950s style as the neo-Gothic bar-like vertical division was removed during the reconstruction. The facade was restored by 2008 and damaged terracotta stones were replaced.

On the roof there are three female bronze statues , which, like the Erasmus Graf von Deroy statue in front of the building, were made by Johann von Halbig in 1864 . From west to east these are Fides (loyalty), Justitia (justice) and Sapientia (wisdom). On the towers there are coats of arms, which are arranged in two by two groups of three. In 1897 the figures were repaired and renewed, and a completely new creation was created for Justitia. The sculptor Ludwig Gamp modeled it and the coppersmith Hygien Kiene drove the figure out of copper sheets into its shape.

The coats of arms of Teisendorf , Ingolstadt , Schrobenhausen , Landsberg am Lech , Schongau , Garmisch , Munich , Rosenheim , Erding and Ebersberg are on the west tower . The coats of arms of Berchtesgaden , Traunstein , Neuötting , Altötting , Mühldorf am Inn , Wasserburg am Inn , Aichach , Friedberg , Bruck in der Oberpfalz , Weilheim in Oberbayern , Bad Tölz and Miesbach are on the east tower .

Inside the new building there are wall art works by Blasius Spreng on the 3rd and 6th floors .
