Reginald Koettlitz

Reginald Koettlitz (born December 23, 1860 in Ostend , Belgium , † January 10, 1916 in Cradock , South Africa ) was a British medic and polar explorer . He took part in the Jackson Harmsworth Expedition to the Arctic and the Discovery Expedition to Antarctica .

Life

Reginald Koettlitz was born in Ostend as the son of a Prussian father, a Lutheran churchman, and his English-born wife, a Bonn governess. The family soon settled in Kent , first in Hougham and later in Dover . Koettlitz attended Dover College and later Guy's Hospital in London, where he was trained as a medical doctor. He then took a job as a country doctor in the mining towns near Coxhoe in County Durham .

Expeditions

In 1894 Koettlitz took part in the Jackson Harmsworth expedition to Franz Josef Land as a doctor and geologist. He brought back a polar bear from the trip , which is still in the Dover Museum today. The Koettlitz Island (Ostrow Kjotliza) on British channel of the Franz-Josef-Lands was named after him.

In 1898/99 he traveled with Herbert Weld Blundell (1852-1935) from Somalia via Abyssinia to Egypt.

In 1901 Koettlitz took part in Robert Falcon Scott's discovery expedition to Antarctica as a doctor and biologist. Many of the samples he took are now in the archives of the Natural History Museum in London . His assistant was Edward Adrian Wilson , who later participated as a doctor on Scott's trip to the South Pole and died in the process. During an advance across the McMurdo Sound , Koettlitz discovered the Koettlitz Glacier and Koettlitz Firnfeld, which were later named after him . For his contribution to the Discovery Expedition, he received a medal from the Royal Geographical Society .

Koettlitz later worked in Brazil. He ended up practicing as a doctor in Craddock, South Africa. He died of dysentery in January 1916 , on the same day as his wife, who was born in France and who suffered a heart attack.
