history

On August 10, 1330, the village Reichenbach was first mentioned in the "Frankensteiner Kaufbrief". As a result of this sale, the place went from the Herfeld holdings of the Lords of Frankenstein to the Counts of Henneberg -Schleusingen and was affiliated to the Schmalkalden office, half of which belonged to the Landgraviate of Hesse from 1360 and completely from 1583 (from 1567 to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel ).

The citizens of the village were subject to ongoing political allegations. They lived from farming or were miners in the pits on the Stahlberg. There were two steel hammers until the 19th century. The development of the population gives an overview of the social development of the village: in 1895 there were 114 people; In 1936 there were 157; In 1948 there were 176 and in 2012 there were 133 people. In 1978 the village was incorporated into Schmalkalden.
