Reinhold Bernhard Brehm (also Reinaldo Brehm; born November 9, 1830 in Renthendorf ; † March 19, 1891 in Barcelona ) was a German doctor, naturalist, ornithologist and writer.

Life

Reinhold Brehm was a son of the pastor and ornithologist Christian Ludwig Brehm and his second wife Bertha (née Reiz). The zoologist and writer Alfred Edmund Brehm was his older brother.

Reinhold Brehm studied medicine at the University of Jena , was active in the Corps Saxonia Jena , an obligatory and color-bearing student association, and after completing his studies and obtaining his doctorate in Jena in 1855, he became a Dr. med. with his brother Alfred, his befriended doctor and entomologist Theodor Apetz and a few other friends in 1856 a two-year trip to Spain . To cover travel expenses, the Brehms had sold shares , the owners of which had the right to participate in the hunted prey. The journey led to Andalusia in southern Spain . The group also stayed in Grenada for a long time . While the rest of the tour group returned to Germany after 1 ½ years with a large collection of birds, Reinhold Brehm decided to stay in Spain. He had fallen in love with the country and its people, but above all with the young Spaniard Maria de las Angustias Lauren, and decided to start a family with her.

Brehm settled as a doctor in Murcia and later in Madrid , where, in addition to his work as an Imperial German embassy doctor , he also worked as a zoologist, in particular as an ornithologist, and explored the Spanish bird world in the vicinity of Madrid. He reported his observations and discoveries to his father at regular intervals. Reinhold Brehm discovered and described numerous Spanish bird species for the first time, which he sent to his father in Renthendorf with initial descriptions after the discovery. His most significant discovery was the Iberian imperial eagle Aquila adalbaerti C.L. Brehm 1861, which his father briefly described in 1861 and named after Adalbert Wilhelm von Bayern .

In 1889, after the death of his son Alfonso († 1888), he moved with his family - he still had three daughters at that time, Maria de la Gloria, Isabella and Irene - from Madrid to Barcelona, where he was still in the last two years of his life was active as a writer.

Reinhold Brehm is considered a pioneer of Spanish ornithology.

On February 13, 1858, Reinhold Brehm with the academic surname Hispanus was accepted as a member ( matriculation no. 1856 ) in the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina .

Reinhold Brehm was buried in the Montjuïc cemetery in Barcelona .

His services to science have so far been largely ignored at the Brehm Memorial .
