Albert Renger-Patzsch (born June 22, 1897 in Würzburg , † September 27, 1966 in Wamel ) was a photographer of the so-called New Objectivity .

Life

His father, himself interested in photography, awakened his interest in the subject. At the age of 14 he already mastered the entire spectrum of recording technology and development. Albert first studied chemistry in Dresden , but soon dropped out and in 1922 took over the management of the picture archive of the Folkwang publishing house in Hagen . In 1923 he went to a photo agency in Berlin. From 1925 he worked as a freelance photographer in Bad Harzburg . In 1929 Renger-Patzsch moved to Essen , where studio space in the Folkwang Museum was made available to him. During this time, industrial photography was his focus. He broke off a teaching position for photography at the Folkwang School in 1933. After a large part of his archive was destroyed by bombing in 1944, he retired to Wamel on the Möhnesee after the end of the war and devoted himself to nature photography . He published his work, for example, in the cultural magazine Westfalenspiegel .

As a staunch opponent of so-called " art photography ", he developed a direct, factual style of photography in the 1920s. His work The world is beautiful (edited by Carl Georg Heise ), published in 1928, became the basis of modern photography. This book contains 100 photographs from different subject areas (plants, people, landscape, architecture, machines and industrial products). The individual subjects are mostly detached from the context and reproduced in brief excerpts. The viewer's gaze is directed to the surface, structure and shape of the depicted object. The pictures appear puristic, simple and clear.

He has recorded his programmatic statements on photography in several essays in which he speaks out against any interpretation of his pictures and denies any artistic intention. He wanted to know understood his photographs merely as documents, reality relentlessly, straightforward and represent realistic, and opposed constructing, assembling, experimenting and using photographic effects , as in photography at the Bauhaus , in pictorialism and surrealism was practiced .

Prices

meaning

Since photography increasingly ousted the graphic arts from the field of image advertising in the 1920s, the advertising industry developed into a lucrative client for many photographers. Renger-Patzsch worked for Pelikan and the Jenaer Glaswerke , among others . One of his best-known advertising photos shows a series of identical, upright irons that appear in Renger-Patzsch's photography as a symbol of industrial mass production (see product photography ).

On this basis, that the beauty of sober functional forms only unfolds in repetition, many advertising photographers built up in the following decades.

Renger-Patzsch's architectural photographs show u. a. Industrial regions characterized by coal and steel, which at that time were not yet considered worthy of a picture . Here he mainly used the vertical and horizontal lines of clearly and functionally oriented buildings. Extreme top and bottom views emphasize the architectural forms.

The photographic historical significance of the works can also be seen in the fact that the artist's handwritten contemporary prints ( vintage prints ) meanwhile (e.g. May 2005 in New York) have fetched prices of around $ 10,000 at auctions and selected top works have already fetched over $ 90,000 low-priced segment) the photo books (e.g. in the forest ) by Renger-Patzsch are now highly traded in auctions.

The Albert Renger Patzsch Prize was named after him, a European photo book prize now endowed with 25,000 euros, which has been awarded by the Dietrich Oppenberg Foundation in connection with the photographic collection in the Folkwang Museum (Essen) since 1991.

Quotes from the artist

“Let us leave the art to the artists and let us try to use the means of photography to create photographs that can survive through their photographic qualities. ( "Praise of the Rheingau" , 1953) "

“I start from reality as space. This room should be designed as a section so that it, when projected onto the plane, results in an orderly picture surface. ( "The world is beautiful" , 1924) "

“To do justice to the rigid lines of modern technology, the airy latticework of the cranes and bridges, the dynamics of 1000-horse machines in the picture, is probably only possible with photography. ( "Ruhr area landscapes 1928-1932" ) "

“Even well-known things give completely new perspectives when viewed in detail. ( "The world of the plant" , 1928) "
