Renié (born as Irene Brouillet * 31 July 1901 in Republic , Washington †, 12. June 1992 in Los Angeles County , California ) was an American costume designer involved in the Oscar ceremony in 1964 the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Film Cleopatra received.

Life

After attending school, Renié studied costume design at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) before working as a costume designer in theaters . After working for some time as a draftsman for costume designs for the film production companies Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and Paramount Pictures , she became a costume designer at RKO Pictures in 1936 for films such as Miss Kitty ( Kitty Foyle ) with stars like Ginger Rogers .

In 1950 she left RKO Pictures and then worked for 20th Century Fox before working as a freelance costume designer from 1954.

In 1952 she and Charles Le Maire were nominated for the first time for the Oscar for best costume design for the black and white film The Model and the Marriage Broker (1951). In 1954 , together with Le Maire, another Oscar nomination followed for the black and white film Companion of his Life ( The President's Lady , 1953) as well as in 1960 for the color film The Fisherman of Galilee ( The Big Fisherman , 1959). In 1955, she was also one of the first costume designers for the in Anaheim opened Disneyland Resort and designed there among other clothes for several topics.

At the Academy Awards in 1964 she finally received the Oscar for best costume design in the color film Cleopatra (1963) together with Irene Sharaff and Vittorio Nino Novarese .

Renié received a final nomination for an Oscar in this category in 1979 for the costumes in The Lord of the Caravan ( Caravans , 1978). She delivered one of her last works for Kathleen Turner in Hot Blood - Cold Blood ( Body Heat , 1981). In addition, she was one of the founders and later President of the Costume Designers Guild , the guild of costume designers, and also a lecturer in costume design in Los Angeles.

Renié Conley died at her home on June 12, 1992 and was survived by her husband, Leland Hawes Conley. She left a son from her first marriage, Truman Van Dyke Jr., and two grandchildren and great-grandchildren each.
