Reseda , even Resede or Wau called, is a plant genus in the family of mignonette (Resedaceae). It is the only genus of this family that occurs in Central Europe.

Vegetative characteristics

Reseda species are herbaceous plants that are annual to perennial . The leaves are simple or pinnate. At the bottom they usually have two teeth.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in the axils of bracts. The mostly hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic with mostly double flower covers . There are four to eight sepals available. The four to eight petals are yellow, whitish or greenish. There are 10 to 25 stamens present. Three or four carpels are a einfächrigen, Upper permanent ovary grown. One stylus is missing. There are three to six scars.

The capsule fruit is already open at the top as an unfertilized ovary and remains open until it is ripe.

etymology

The scientific name Reseda is derived from the Latin resedare for “breastfeed”, “to alleviate”. Various types of Reseda were used as remedies or to conjure up diseases. In German Resede used since the 18th century. The German common name Wau is derived from Wouw or Wouwe , the Dutch name for the Färber-Wau . The first evidence of this German name comes from 1632 and 1647, and the name Wau has also been used in technical works since 1738 .
