The Rhaetian Alps (often also Rhaetian - , Italian Alpi Retiche ) are a mountain group in the central Eastern Alps . They are located in the border area between eastern Switzerland , Austria , Liechtenstein and Italy north of the Valtellina ( Addatal ) and east of the Hinterrhein and Bergell .

The Rhaetian Alps are named after the Raetians .

location

Most of the Rhaetian Alps are located in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, east of the Splügen Pass . They are separated by the Engadin into a northern part (highest peak: Piz Linard , 3411  m above sea level ) to Liechtenstein and the Austrian states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol , and a southern part (highest peak: Piz Bernina , 4049  m above sea level ) , which is also in the Italian provinces of Sondrio , South Tyrol (Province of Bozen) and Tyrol.

Classification

The Rhaetian Alps include the sub-groups of Bernina , Albula , Livigno , Umbrail , Sesvenna , Silvretta and Rätikon .

In the past, the Plessur Alps were also included.

According to the Italian / French system of the Partizione delle Alpi , the Alpi Retiche are located more south - i.e. only cover the southern part mentioned above - and extend east to the Timmelsjoch . They then include the Bernina-Livigno Group, also the Alpi Orobiche south of the Valtellina , the Ortler Alps with the Sobretta and Sesvenna, the Brenta Dolomites and the Ötztal Alps (Alpi Venoste) .

landscape

In the southern part is located between Inn and Ofenpass the Swiss National Park .
