The rhenag (full name rhenag Rheinische Energie AG ) is a regional energy utilities and nationally active municipal utility partners with headquarters in Cologne .
The company supplies end consumers directly with electricity, gas and water in its supply area , but also holds stakes in other supply companies and is a service provider for municipal utilities and other small and medium-sized energy suppliers.
history
Rhenag was founded in 1872 on the initiative of King Wilhelm of Prussia as the "Rheinische Wasserwerkgesellschaft" in Cologne. The business content was initially the planning, construction and operation of waterworks in the Cologne area, especially on the right bank of the Rhine. A short time later, gas works were added and the Rheinische Wasserwerkgesellschaft became an important gas and water supplier in the Cologne region.
In 1930 Thüringer Gas AG (Thüga) took over the majority of the shares and the name was changed to Rheinische Energie Aktiengesellschaft , or rhenag for short .
In 1957 Thüga gave the majority of the shares to Rheinische Elektrizitätswerk , but held a minority stake until 2001. After the concentration on the German supply market with the merger of RWE and VEW and the formation of E.ON from VEBA and VIAG , the German and European antitrust authorities demanded that the holdings be unbundled. E.ON's own Thüga then left rhenag and in 2002 some of the rhenag holdings were spun off into a new Thüga Beteiligungen AG . The supply business in the Cologne area remained fully with RWE.
Business activity
Rhenag's business activities are based on two pillars: the energy business and the service business. In the energy business, the operational base and mainstay of rhenag, the company supplies households, businesses and public institutions with gas, electricity, water and heat. In the B-to-B service business, rhenag offers municipal utilities and regional energy supply companies support in all business and technical questions of a supply company. This makes rhenag one of the few energy supply companies that is also active in the consulting business.
Coverage area
Rhenag supplies a total of around 140,000 customers in the Rhein-Sieg district (North Rhine- Westphalia), northern Rhineland-Palatinate ( Westerwald ) and in the towns of Mettmann , Rommerskirchen and Niederkassel with electricity, gas and water. Around 83,000 customers are supplied with natural gas in the entire Rhein-Sieg district on the right bank of the Rhine - with the exception of Troisdorf and Bad Honnef . Around 25,000 customers purchase rhenag electricity in Siegburg . In addition, rhenag operates the street lighting and water network in Siegburg and is expanding a network of charging stations for five charging stations for electric vehicles . The company is responsible for the water supply for a total of 24,000 customers . In Hennef , rhenag operates the water network for the municipalities , and in Königswinter it also has its own water supply. In Much , rhenag is responsible for the gas supply as well as the water management and wastewater billing. Since January 2008, around 4,000 gas customers have been supplied in external areas (e.g. Bonn ). In Cologne, rhenag and Thüga AG operate a data center for 120 utility companies with a total of around three million billing units and an invoiced turnover of around EUR 5.0 billion.
