Richard Geiger

Richard Geiger (born June 29, 1870 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; † February 9, 1945 in Budapest , Kingdom of Hungary ) was an Austrian painter of Jewish descent. His work includes paintings and genre pictures , but above all graphics such as illustrations , bookplates and posters .

Life

Geiger first attended a drawing school in Vienna and then studied at the local Academy of Fine Arts , where he was a student of Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger . He studied sculpture with Fritz Klimsch at the Academy of Arts in Berlin . Here he took part in the exhibitions of the academy with his portrait busts and sculptures. In Paris he studied at the Académie Julian and worked in François Flameng's studio . Here he mainly painted scenes from the life of the Clochards .

From 1893 Geiger worked as a genre painter in Budapest. In Hungary he worked for the Izidor Kner publishing house in Gyomaendrőd, among others . From 1906 Geiger illustrated twenty Hungarian Karl May volumes for the Athenaeum publishing house in Budapest with a total of 104 autotypes . During the First World War he worked as an illustrator for the Hungarian weekly newspaper Tolnai Világlapja . In the 1920s he illustrated countless books and created bookplates and posters. He also painted portraits, nudes, genre pictures and mythological scenes. He became known primarily for his carnival motifs and numerous portraits of Pierretten (female version of a Pierrot ). He won several prizes in graphic competitions and participated in exhibitions in France, Germany and Hungary.
