Richard James Overy (born December 23, 1947 in London ) is a British historian whose specialty is the Second World War , especially the German-Soviet War .

Life

He studied at Gonville and Caius College at the University of Cambridge (BA 1969, MA 1972 and PhD 1977). In 1972/73 he was a Research Fellow at Churchill College and from 1973 to 1979 a Fellow and College Lecturer at Queens' College . From 1976 to 1979 he was Assistant University Lecturer, from 1980 to 1988 Lecturer and from 1988 to 1992 Reader. From 1992 he was Professor of Modern History at King's College London . In 2004 he moved to the University of Exeter .

Overy is a member of the Advisory Editorial Board of War in History . In 1989 he gave the Harmon Memorial Lecture in Military History at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and in 2010 the Lees Knowles Lecture at the University of Cambridge . In the 2014 Dutch television documentary The Days After Hitler , Overy was also interviewed as a British historian.

Overy is married for the third time and has five children.
