Richard Veenstra (born July 10, 1981 in Ossenzijl ) is a Dutch darts player who competes in BDO tournaments under his nickname "Flyers" .

Career

Veenstra, who played soccer in his early teens, found darts through a friend at the age of 25. In his first league game for DVS, a darts league in Veenstra's home region of Steenwijkerland , he already scored the maximum of 180 points four times. Veenstra won his first ranking tournament, in which the former youth champion Pieter Collijn took part. A darts club in Heerenveen became aware of the aspiring player, so that he then played in clubs in the leagues in Steenwijkerland and Friesland . After the team in the Steenwijk League, which he formed with some friends, was disbanded, the Dutchman began to concentrate on a professional darts career, so that he took part in the Dutch Super League and finished 2nd in 2014. The first BDO tournament that Veenstra won was the Luxembourg Open in October 2014. A few days later he took part in qualifying for a BDO World Championship for the first time, but failed with this endeavor. His first participation in the World Masters , the oldest still existing darts tournament, ended in the same year after the preliminary round. For the first time, Veenstra received an invitation for the WDF World Cup Pairs in 2015 and together with Wesley Harms formed the Netherlands team. Both were able to defeat the favored Englishmen Scott Mitchell and Mark McGeeney 6: 3 and thus win the title for the Netherlands.

2016 is the first time Veenstra qualified for a World Cup of BDO by organized many of the Association Opens played and achieved good results there. Here the Dutchman made it to the semifinals, in which he was defeated by the later tournament runner-up Jeff Smith with 5: 6 in sets. At the BDO World Trophy 2016, however, Veenstra directly lost his opening game against qualifier Tony O'Shea . This was followed in September 2016 by the triumph with compatriot Harms at the WDF Europe Cup against Scotland and the victory in the final of the individual tournament against Jim Williams . Nevertheless, the year 2016 ended disappointingly for the Dutchman, as he failed in the first round at both the World Masters and the Finder Darts Masters . The BDO World Championship in the following year, for which Veenstra was set for the first time because of his improved world ranking position, ended for Veenstra this time after the round of 16, in which he lost 4 sets against Danny Noppert . Veenstra won his next major title in 2017 at the German Masters , where he defeated Yoeri Duijster 6: 3 in the final. Veenstra failed again in the first round of the World Masters and was surprisingly eliminated in the first round against the Australian Raymond Smith at the WDF World Cup, whose European edition the Dutchman won last year . At the BDO World Darts Championship 2018 Veenstra made it to the quarter-finals, in which he lost to Michael Unterbuchner 4-5 sets. Towards the end of 2018, Veenstra celebrated greater success when he triumphed at both the British Open and the British Classics around September . One of his greatest successes is his entry into the final of the Finder Darts Masters in December 2018. During the tournament, Veenstra beat Wesley Harms and Jim Williams, among others, before he lost the final to the reigning world champion Glen Durrant . In 2019 he reached the round of 16 of the BDO World Darts Championship .
