action

Graham Merrill is a moderately successful writer from London. One day he notices a male otter in the window of a pet shop, which he finally buys and names Mij. After the otter devastated Merrill's apartment, Merrill moved into a rustic country house overlooking the sea on the west coast of Scotland. Here he made the acquaintance of Dr. Mary MacKenzie and her dog Johnny from the nearby village. Mij and Johnny play together in the water and romp across the fields.

One day Mij meets a female otter. Regardless of the dangers, Mij keeps moving away from the country house to play with the female. He is almost killed once after being caught in a net. However, people find him in time and can save him. Merrill spends a lot of time drawing Mij. He notices that he can only grasp the otter's true dexterity underwater. He is building a large tank out of old windows to achieve his goal.

Not long after that, Merrill has to go to London to clear up matters with the bank. During this time he saw a woman's fur coat made of otter skin in a shop window and was shocked. He leaves Mij in the care of Dr. MacKenzie. While she is walking her dog and Mij one day, the otter is killed with a pickaxe by the ditch builder Angus. Dr. MacKenzie turns around in horror and Angus justifies himself with the words "It was just an otter". Upon his return, Merrill is dejected when Dr. McKenzie announces the death of his beloved otter.

Some time later, Merrill and Dr. MacKenzie found a trio of otter cubs near the country house, accompanied by their mother. They are pleased to see that it is Mij's female and offspring who play in their father's swimming area.

In the final scene, Merrill, who had tried in vain for years to write a novel about the Marsh Arabs , picks up pen and paper and begins to tell the story of his otter Mij - and what he has learned about himself in this friendship.
