Rio is the second studio album by the British new wave band Duran Duran .

History of origin

My Own Way was the first song that was recorded for the album and was written in October 1981. It was released as a single in November 1981 to build on the success of Girls on Film . Afterwards it went on tour with Blondie . The later version of the album was recorded much more slowly, had a different arrangement and a slightly different text.

The actual recordings took place from January to February 1982 in the Air Studios in London. The producer was Colin Thurston , who already lent a hand on the debut album . Patrick Nagel drew the album cover, Malcolm Garrett was responsible for the design .

The album hit record stores on May 10, 1982. The US version of the album was released via Harvest Records and was characterized by poor quality, which meant that it was not very successful in America. In order to remedy this mistake, the company first developed the image of a dance band and released the EP Carnival in September 1982 . The album was then remixed and the new version was released in November 1982. This results in some differences to the European version. Another version of the album came out a few months later with a new version of Hungry Like the Wolf .

In addition to the above-mentioned re-releases in the USA, there is a special LP pressing for Australia, which went to the radio DJs there and each song was preceded by a short statement by Nick Rhodes and John Taylor. At the end of the LP there are some jingles . Only about 300 to 500 copies were pressed, which quickly became collector's items.

success

On the Billboard 200 , Rio reached its highest position in March 1983 with number 6 and remained in the US album charts for a total of 129 weeks. Rio reached number 2 in the UK charts and stayed in the UK Top 100 for a total of 109 weeks.

Rio ranked 98th on Q Magazine's June 2000 list of the 100 Best British Albums of All Time. Rio ranked 95th on Pitchfork Media's 2002 list of the 100 Best Albums of the 1980s .

Re-releases

The first CD version was only released in the United States in 1985 and was Capitol's third CD ever. The first was The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd . A European CD version was only released in 1994.

In July 2001, EMI released a remastered new edition entitled "Rio: Enhanced Remastered", which had video clips for the songs Rio , Hungry Like the Wolf and Save a Prayer added. In 2008, Rio was released on DVD by Eagle Rock Entertainment with uncensored music videos and concert clips.

Single releases

A total of four titles were released as single, which were particularly successful in the charts in Great Britain and the USA:

  • My Own Way (November 16, 1981)
  • Hungry Like the Wolf (May 4, 1982)
  • Save a Prayer (August 9, 1982)
  • Rio (November 1, 1982)

Above all, Rio , the last single from the album, is still present today thanks to the MTV promotion along with the elaborate video, which was partly shot on a sailing yacht off Antigua . According to keyboardist Rhodes, the three videos shot in the Caribbean cost as much as Jennifer Lopez spends on her hairstyle in a year.

Duran Duran only appeared in the German and Austrian charts with later singles such as Wild Boys (1984) and A View to a Kill (1985). Save a Prayer reached number 27 in the German charts in early 1985 with the release of the live album Arena in a revised single version.

Reviews

It's a fucking killer second album. ”( Bob Geldof )

According to Pitchfork Media , Duran Duran enriched the 1980s “ with a number of hot singles (most of which can be found on the unstoppable side A of Rio) ” ( Rob Mitchum , German: “with a number of hot singles (most of which on the unstoppable A-side of Rio were to be found) “). Laut.de gave the highest rating in retrospect in its milestone column and described Rio as “the perfect life, decadent up to your ears. Thrilling and life-affirming. "
