Robbin Ruiter (born March 25, 1987 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch football goalkeeper . He has been playing for Willem II Tilburg since 2020 .

Career

Ruiter was born in Amsterdam and spent his childhood in Volendam . At the age of five he began his football career at RKAV Volendam , where he wanted to be in goal like his father. He then moved to the youth academy of FC Volendam , where he was seen by many as a great talent. In the 2007/08 season, Ruiter became increasingly involved in the first team under coach Stanley Menzo . In the 2008/09 season he finally joined the first team, in which he was the third goalkeeper behind Jeroen Verhoeven and Harmen Kuperus.

After Verhoeven moved to AFC Ajax in the 2009/10 season , he became the second goalkeeper behind Theo Zwarthoed, who moved to Amsterdam from RKC Waalwijk . On November 20, 2009 he made his debut in professional football in the home game against Helmond Sport due to an injury to Zwarthoed . Although the match was lost, Ruiter was instantly named man of the match in his debut match. After that, his career went quickly. Ruiter won the competition against Zwarthoed and thus achieved his regular place in the Volendam team. In the 2011/12 season he was a major force for the club. Various clubs, including Feyenoord , FC Groningen , Newcastle United and Southampton FC , showed interest in the player. On April 18, 2012, FC Utrecht announced that Ruiter had signed a four-year contract. He was then regularly used in the Eredivisie . In September 2014, the contract was extended early until mid-2017. In the five years at the club, Ruiter completed a total of 142 games for Utrecht.

In August 2017 Ruiter moved to AFC Sunderland in the Football League Championship on a free transfer . After two years as a substitute goalkeeper in England, he moved back to his home country. He signed a contract with PSV Eindhoven . There he came to his first and only assignment for PSV on September 16, 2019. In August of the following year, Ruiter signed with league rival Willem II Tilburg .

Others

His uncle Jan Ruiter (* 1946) was also a soccer goalkeeper. With the Belgian first division club RSC Anderlecht , he won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 .
