Robert Knorr as a Terra Sigillata researcher

His passion was researching the Roman tableware , the terra sigillata . Together with Hans Dragendorff and August Oxé, he is one of the pioneers in research into terra sigillata. At the beginning of the 20th century, Knorr began to chronologically classify this ceramic shape according to edge shapes and types of decoration, he assigned certain types to certain potters or factories. He examined the terra sigillata from numerous Roman sites in Württemberg , such as Cannstatt , Köngen-Grinario , Rottenburg- Sumelocenna , Rottweil- Arae Flaviae , but also from the potters at Blickweiler and Eschweiler Hof and Pompeji .

His publications with detailed images still serve as reference works for the identification and publication of Terra Sigillata at other sites.

Because of his services to ceramic research, he became a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute in 1913 , and the University of Tübingen awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1927 .
