Life, education and work

Robert Schmuki spent his childhood and youth in Zurich- Schwamendingen and completed his school years with the mathematical and scientific Matura at the Gymnasium Rämibühl in Zurich.

In his sporting career, he became Swiss Youth Champion with the Zurich Grasshoppers (Generation M. Schällibaum , M. Brunner , M. Rueda ). After a serious game injury, he switched from football to basketball and was active as a player, coach and coach in Switzerland's national leagues until 1997. He acted as an association instructor and selection trainer for the Swiss Basketball Association and as an expert for youth and sports in trainer training.

He first studied history at the University of Zurich , but after three years switched to the architecture department of the ETH Zurich , where he graduated as an architect and urban planner in 1995 . From 1995 onwards, as a freelance architect, he primarily devoted himself to urban and district development tasks .

As part of the question of how meeting places for young people can be created in city districts, he adopted the idea of midnight basketball , which had been developed by G. Van Standifer in Maryland , USA from 1986 , and adapted it to the Swiss conditions as an open sports meeting point for young people . He expanded what was initially only intended for young people with the Open Sunday program for children from 2006 and with Mini Move from 2011 for toddlers . The concept of the Open Sunday was adopted in Germany from 2014.

From 2002 Schmuki set up the support organization Midnight Projects Switzerland to implement the children and youth programs. The head office was in Uster ZH. Realization offices in Lucerne (2006), Basel (2006), Bern (2008), Lausanne (2009), Bellinzona (2009) and St. Gallen (2010) were created.

In 2010 Schmuki founded the IdéeSport Foundation in Bern as the successor organization to the Friends' Association, with around 190 employees (48 full-time positions) in 2014 and a sales volume of CHF 5.42 million. Today (as of summer 2015) the foundation runs 189 children and youth projects in 19 cantons of Switzerland with around 127,000 participants. This makes the foundation one of the largest providers of open child and youth work in Switzerland.

In 2014, Schmuki resigned from his management duties at the IdéeSport Foundation and moved to the Swiss children's aid organization Pro Juventute as director . He ended this mandate in mid-2016 and is currently involved in research and further training in charitable work at the Center for Philanthropy Studies at the University of Basel .

Robert Schmuki is married and lives in Zurich and Basel.
