Robert Sturm

Robert Sturm  (* 1935 in Bad Elster , † 1994 in Fulda ) was a German sculptor , ceramicist and university professor .

Life

From 1956 to 1962, Sturm studied sculpture with Walter Linck , Brigitte Meyer-Denninghoff and Bernhard Bylandt-Rheydt, as well as ceramics with Walter Popp and art education with Ernst Röttger at the Kunsthochschule Kassel . He was a master student of the sculpture class and from 1960 to 1961 and assistant to Ernst Röttger for basic teaching and plastic design.

As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , Sturm undertook study trips to Yugoslavia , Greece and Turkey from 1959 to 1961 . From 1971 he taught as a professor at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences . After his appointment as a member of the Academie Internationale de la Ceramique, Geneva, in 1986 he also joined Group 83 - German Ceramists.

In 1980, Sturm co-founded the Kecskemét Group in Hungary. Eight years later he was hired as a guest lecturer at the University of Haifa in Israel  and as a guest lecturer at the European Art Academy in Trier in 1990 . Sturm died in the middle of work in 1994.

Since 1959, Sturm worked with sculptures made of various materials ( stone , bronze , steel and aluminum) as well as with graphics in various techniques. Since 1968 he found his desired expression in ceramic materials and in the early 1980s he developed his own distinctive visual language in the plastic field. By developing a special ceramic technique, the high- fire raku technique - a combination of the classic East Asian raku technique with the hardness of high-fire stoneware - Sturm found the appropriate means of expression for his head and torso sculptures, which make up most of his oeuvre. Its forms are always fragmentary, without reaching a final solidity, a whole.
