Robert Zuckerkandl (born December 5, 1856 in Raab , Hungary , † May 28, 1926 in Prague ) was an Austrian lawyer , economist and university professor .

Life

He grew up in a Jewish family in Győr , Hungary . His father Leon Zuckerkandl (1819–1899) came from the village of Bądy in Masuria . His mother Eleanor (1828–1900) was born a king.

After school, he studied law at the University of Vienna , did his doctorate and was habilitated by Carl Menger . In 1889, before he was admitted as court and court advocate in Vienna , his dogma-historical monograph “On the theory of price ” was published. In 1894 he became an associate professor at the German University of Prague, succeeding Emil Sax and alongside Friedrich von Wieser, and in 1896 he was given the full professorship . With his works and his teaching, Zuckerkandl contributed significantly to the dissemination of the ideas of the Austrian School .

Zuckerkandl was married to Therese Zuckerkandl, née Kern, from Gleiwitz , who was 5 years his junior . Since the marriage remained childless, they adopted Helene Nothmann, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1880 . After Zuckerkandl's death, his wife moved to Jena with their adopted daughter and had Walter Gropius build a modern villa there in 1927 , which was finished two years later and furnished with furniture by Richard Riemerschmid . After receiving her deportation notice, Therese Zuckerkandl committed suicide on September 10, 1942. Helene followed her on June 14, 1944.

The physicians Emil and Otto Zuckerkandl and the industrialist Victor Zuckerkandl were his brothers.
