Rudolf Ernst (born February 14, 1854 in Vienna , † 1932 in Paris ) or Rudolph Ernst , who exhibited in France under the name Rodolphe Ernst , was an Austrian painter , graphic artist and ceramic painter who lived in France from 1876 . It can be assigned to romanticism and achieved success mainly through oriental motifs.

Life

The son of an architect, encouraged by his father, entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the age of 15 , went on a study trip to Rome and continued his training from 1873 to 1876 with August Eisenmenger (1830-1907 ) and Anselm Feuerbach (1829–1880).

In 1876 he settled in Paris , where he was followed by Ludwig Deutsch (1855-1935) and Johann Discart , his former classmates in von Feuerbach's class. In 1877 he took part in the Salon des artistes français for the first time . Study trips to Spain , Morocco and Constantinople probably followed around 1880 .

Based in Fontenay-aux-Roses , a southern suburb of Paris, from 1905 , he launched the production of faience tiles with oriental motifs.

Rodolphe Ernst initially devoted himself to genre painting . From 1885 he created exclusively paintings with oriental motifs, among which scenes from the world of the Islamic religion, such as interior views of mosques, take a special place. In addition, he created harems and other everyday scenes from North Africa and the Middle East. The basis for these eclectic works were photographs and prints, but also his own memories and the sketches made during the artist's travels to Morocco and Constantinople.
