Comte Roger de Damas

Comte Joseph Élisabeth Roger de Damas D'Antigny ( 1765 - September 18, 1823 ) was a French count, general and brother of Joseph-François-Louis-Charles de Damas .

Life

He entered the Régiment du roi in his twelfth year , from which he deserted and entered Russian services. In 1787 he took part in the war against the Turks . A bold and fortunate attack on the Turkish flagship, as well as his assault on Ochakov , won him the favor of Empress Catherine II of Russia , who promoted him to colonel of her army . Towards the end of 1789 he returned to Paris , but after the outbreak of the revolution he went to Vienna , received command of a Russian regiment in Jassy and played a major role in the conquest of Ismail .

In September 1792 he accompanied Count Charles von Artois, who later became King Charles X , to Champagne . After the miserable end of this campaign, he went to Saint Petersburg and England and then commanded a legion in the army of Prince Condé's emigrants in the campaigns of 1796 and 1797.

When Condé's army entered Russian wages , he went to Italy , was given the command of a division under Karl Mack's command in Naples , and his division was the only one in this shameful campaign to preserve its military honor. Also in 1805 he distinguished himself as the commander of the Neapolitan troops. In 1814 he was reinstated in all of his earlier positions and appointed lieutenant-général and commander of Lyon . After fruitless efforts to receive the royal troops in obedience when Napoleon returned from Elba , he followed Louis XVIII. to Belgium .

After the second restoration, he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies , but was returned to his post as Governor of Lyon by the King. He died on September 18, 1823.
