Rogues en Vogue is the thirteenth album by the German heavy metal band Running Wild and was released in February 2005.

Emergence

After singer and guitarist Rolf "Rock 'n' Rolf" Kasparek to the two previous albums " Victory " and " The Brotherhood had put up" allegations that the works not a real drummer called "Angelo Sasso" but a drum machine to was heard, the drummer position was reassigned. Matthias Liebetruth, who had previously played live with the band, was now also involved in the studio production. The recordings were delayed, however, because Kasparek was very busy with the production of a live DVD and the best-of CD "20 Years in History" and with renovation work in the studio in the years after the last album.

As with the predecessor, the recordings took place in Kasparek's own Jolly Roger sound studio with the assistance of Katharina Nowy. Peter Pichl did not play bass on all of the songs, he was only in the studio on the songs "Angel of Mercy", "Skull & Bones", "Black Gold" and "Winged & Feathered". All other bass recordings are also from Kasparek. The vocals were also recorded as in "The Brotherhood" in Casa Nowy under the direction of Niki Nowy. The drums were also recorded in the Downtown Studio in Kirchhorst . The album was mastered in the usual way by Rainer Holst in the Staccato Studios .

The album cover was designed by Rudolf Wintzer. It shows a gold plaque embossed with the head of the band mascot "Adrian", who here wears a crown and behind which bones cross in the manner of Jolly Roger . The plaque is surrounded by gold and silver human skeletons .

The album was released on February 21, 2005 via GUN Records and was available as CD and limited digipak with the bonus tracks “Cannonball Tongue” and “Libertalia”.

A short, five-concert tour of Germany with alternating supporting acts (including Stormwarrior ) took place for the album in September 2005 . The band had previously performed at the Metalway Festival in Gernika , Spain, in August . In October there was an additional appearance at the Scream Festival in Lübeck .

Meanings of some songs

  • “Draw the Line” reports in a relatively general way about a revolution .
  • "Skull & Bones" is a song about piracy and describes a pirate attack. The song title again refers to the Jolly Roger , the classic pirate flag.
  • “Black Gold” addresses the Iraq war as being driven by the need for control over oil wells and also refers to the alleged weapons of mass destruction as a reason for war.
  • "Rogues en Vogue" is about a conspiratorial group of "villains" (English: rogues ) who strive for world domination.
  • "Dead Man's Road" criticizes brutal and fast-paced TV entertainment.
  • "The War" deals with the First World War and possible conspiracy theories surrounding its outbreak. In the middle section, various military marches are quoted on the electric guitar, including the “Florentiner Marsch” (Opus 214) by Julius Fučík and “ Preussens Gloria ” by Gottfried Piefke .
  • "Libertalia", a bonus track, reports on the fictional pirate state of the same name Libertalia , which represents a social utopia of freedom and equality.

Criticism and reception

Following the previous album, which was perceived as bad and uninspired, “Rogues en Vogue” was seen in many places as an improvement in terms of the material it contained, but the album production was occasionally criticized. Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard emphasized that this would noticeably reduce the quality of the album:

“The songs themselves are okay to good, even if not a single track is really enthusiastic. But that is primarily due to the amateur production, which makes an eleven-minute “epic” like “The War” seem simply silly. "

- Götz Kühnemund

The reviewer Jens Pohl from the webzine metal.de didn't see it as tragic :

“The bottom line is that“ Rogues En Vogue ”is neither a masterpiece nor a total failure, but an above-average album with many outstanding songs. [...] Of course you can argue about the production, but on my system the material pops as it should. [...] "Rogues En Vogue" [counts] soberly [...] to the most creative albums since "Blazon Stone" and achieves a place very high within the band's own discography. "

- Jens Pohl

At powermetal.de Björn Backes expressed his opinion on the improvement as follows:

“[...] at least it can be said that Running Wild have caught up again with“ Rogues En Vogue ”despite some entry problems and are on the mend. Classics like “Black Hand Inn” remain untouchable - and probably will always be. But hey, a really solid album by Running Wild, [...] I prefer that to "Victory" and "The Brotherhood" together. "

- Bjorn Backes

In commercial terms, the album was unable to repeat the success of its predecessors (No. 26 on "Victory", No. 23 on "The Brotherhood") and entered the charts at No. 39. After two weeks, the plant had already dropped out of the top 100. The album was also successful in Sweden (49th place) and Greece (41st place).

The 2006 compilation “Best of Adrian”, which only takes songs from the GUN Records period into account, included “Rogues en Vogue” and “Draw the Line” from the album.
