Victory is a music album released in 2000 by the German heavy metal band Running Wild and the band's eleventh album. After the two previous releases “Masquerade” and “The Rivalry”, it marks the end of the trilogy on the subject of “Good and Evil”. It is also the band's first album since 1987 that lyrically does not deal with piracy and privateing.

Emergence

After the recordings for the previous album " The Rivalry ", drummer Jörg Michael left the band. On the tour he was initially represented by the then Rage drummer Christos Efthimiadis, but no longer took part in the album production for “Victory”. Apart from Michael's exit, there was no change in the lineup of the band.

As with the predecessor, the recordings took place in the Horus Sound Studio under the direction of Gerhard Wölfle. The mastering was again in the hands of Rainer Holst and was carried out in the Staccato Studios . Guitarist and singer Rolf "Rock 'n' Rolf" Kasparek was also named as a music producer again .

The naming of a certain Angelo Sasso as a drummer caused some irritation. In the booklet, "All drums by Angelo Sasso" was written instead of naming the musician as usual, followed by a bullet-point mention of the instrument. In addition Sasso appeared in the list thanks to the ambiguous wording "Angelo for hitting almost, hard and often", while the later band drummer Matthias Liebetruth "for special hi-hat - overdubs " was mentioned there. This in connection with the clinically perceived drum sound on the album caused speculation as to whether Sasso could actually be a drum computer . Rolf Kasparek, on the other hand, repeatedly emphasized that Sasso was an old friend who would prefer to stay anonymous and stay away from the metal scene. A possibility that is occasionally expressed by skeptics is that Angelo Sasso is the pseudonym of the person who programmed the drum machine.

The album cover shows a flag that was already shown on the title of the previous album and symbolized the “good” there, with the inscription “Victory” on a black and white checkered background. The CD itself shows the cap of a hussar , the booklet shows various historical medals and awards.

The album was released in early 2000 on GUN Records as a CD and limited digipack , which included a poster as a bonus . The album was also released in 2003 as part of a 3CD box entitled "The Legendary Tales", which also contained the albums "The Rivalry" and "The Brotherhood". Here the album was included in a digipack, but without a booklet and poster.

A tour for the album took place in March 2000 exclusively in Germany and together with Iron Savior . In the summer, Running Wild performed at renowned open-air festivals ( Sweden Rock , Bang Your Head , Rock Machina , Powermad ).

Meanings of some songs

  • As a Beatles song, “Revolution” is only the band's second cover version to appear on an official release. The first was “Genocide”, originally by Thin Lizzy and released in 1991 on the single “Little Big Horn”.
  • “The Final Waltz” is a short instrumental piece in waltz time .
  • “Tsar” is about the October Revolution and the end of tsarism in Russia in 1917. After the song “War and Peace” from the previous album, it is the second song in a row that uses melodies and instruments ( balalaika ) of Russian folk music.
  • "The Hussar" describes a typical cavalry attack of the 18th century and is named after the hussars .

reception

The album was immediately rated highly in the critics. In Rock Hard , Götz Kühnemund gave the work 8.5 / 10 points, but criticized the mostly medium-fast tempo of the songs and also asked the question of a possible drum computer. The webzine powermetal.de emphasized that the album offers exactly what fans would expect from the band, which was brought to the point by playing a gag from JBO ("Running Wild play Running Wild").

The album reached number 26 in the German album charts and stayed in the charts for a total of four weeks. The album reached number 52 in the Swedish charts.

On the 2006 published Best of "Best of Adrian", which summarizes the songs from the time of Running Wild on GUN Records, the songs "Victory" and "Tsar" can be found.
