The music album The Brotherhood was released in February 2002 and is the twelfth studio work of the band Running Wild .

Emergence

In the run-up to the recordings, there was another cast. Guitarist Thilo Herrmann and bassist Thomas Smuszynski left Running Wild. The new bass player was Peter Pichl, who was previously active with the Jutta Weinhold Band and Yargos ; a new lead guitarist did not join the band. Instead, Rolf "Rock 'n' Rolf" Kasparek now recorded all the guitar parts.

The recordings took place from July to November 2001 in Kasparek's Jolly Roger Sound Studio and in Casa Nowy . As before, the vocals were recorded in the Horus Sound Studio under the direction of Gerhard Wölfle. The mastering took place again by Rainer Holst in the Staccato Studios .

The cover artwork was designed by ARTCOM . It shows a skull with a black top hat and an eye patch with a dollar sign embroidered on it. Two sabers are crossed under the head, so that the picture arouses associations with Jolly Roger . An early pistol (a muzzle loader ) and a red rose can be seen on the back of the CD case . The booklet also shows photos of Rock 'n' Rolf in various historical uniforms and also in a black tailcoat (with the cylinder already mentioned). These photos were taken by Ralf and Gabi Steiner.

The album was released on February 25, 2002 via GUN Records . It was released as a CD and limited digipak with the bonus tracks “Powerride” and “Faceless”. Both songs were the first bonus songs ever recorded by the band for a first edition. In 2003 a 3CD box was released which combined the digipak version and the two previous albums under the name "The Legendary Tales".

A tour to "The Brotherhood" made the band complete a total of nine appearances in Germany in March 2002. The drummer was Matthias Liebetruth, Rebellion played as the opening act . During the performance in Osnabrück on March 20, 2002, the live album " Live 2002 " was recorded, which contains old and new songs as well as a drum solo by Liebetruth. In addition, the band performed at the Gods of Metal Festival in Milan in the summer and played in support of the Donots in the fall . In 2003 the band performed for the first time at the Wacken Open Air .

Meanings of some songs

  • “Welcome to Hell” describes the modern world metaphorically as hell .
  • "Soulstrippers" criticizes reality TV and similar TV programs , which invade the privacy of the participants more and more.
  • "The Brotherhood" deals with a conspiratorial "brotherhood" that is behind all the wrongdoings of the world and is only out for financial profit.
  • "Siberian Winter" is a Russian-influenced instrumental piece and at the same time the conclusion of a trilogy of similar songs that began on the two previous albums with "War and Peace" and "Tsar".
  • “Pirate Song” again deals with pirates .
  • "The Ghost" tells the story of Thomas Edward Lawrence , better known as "Lawrence of Arabia", and accordingly has oriental influences and melodies.

Criticism and reception

After the reviews of the previous album "Victory" had turned out benevolent, they were now significantly worse. In addition to the fact that the alleged drum machine "Angelo Sasso" was again viewed with skepticism, the critics now also saw a clear drop in the song material. Michael Edele suspected on the Laut.de website that “The Brotherhood” was “an album [...] that no one except the absolutely die-hard fans [could] have really waited for”. The Metal Observer gave the album 5/10 points and called the album "terrifyingly weak", but singled out the song "The Ghost", which "with its Arabic melodies [...] falls into the category" absolutely worth listening to "" . Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard summed up his opinion on the album as follows:

“The Brotherhood” gives me the impression for a long time as if Rolf had shot his powder in the meantime. In any case, there are worlds between this disc and milestones like "Black Hand Inn" and "Death or Glory". "

- Götz Kühnemund

The album was still a commercial success and after its release it entered the German album charts at number 23 and stayed in the top 100 for three weeks. This is the third-highest ranking of a running wild album so far.

On the 2003 best-of compilation "20 Years in History", the album was represented with "The Brotherhood" and "Welcome to Hell". On the 2006 compilation "Best of Adrian", which only considers songs from the time at GUN Records, these two songs as well as "Pirate Song" could also be accommodated.
