The Rivalry is a music album released in 1998 by the German heavy metal band Running Wild . It is the tenth work of the band and, with its predecessor “Masquerade” and its successor “Victory”, forms a loosely connected trilogy on the subject of “good and bad”.

Emergence

The band had taken a two-year hiatus after the previous album and returned to the studio in 1997 with the same line-up.

The album was recorded in the Hanoverian Horus Sound Studio and in the Vox Sound Studio in Bendestorf and mixed by Gerhard Wölfle. The mastering was Rainer Holst in the Staccato studio to answer for. The whole recording process was coordinated by guitarist and singer Rolf "Rock 'n' Rolf" Kasparek , who also took over the entire music production .

The album cover was designed by Andreas Marschall , who also made drawings for many other bands (including Blind Guardian ). It shows the running wild mascot "Adrian" in a historical uniform surrounded by two flags, each supposed to symbolize good and bad. Photographs on the CD cover and in the booklet were made by Thorsten Herbig and the company LookLoud! prepared.

The album was the band's last collaboration with drummer Jörg Michael , who had previously joined Stratovarius . For the tour for the album he was represented by the then rage drummer Christos Efthimiadis. A certain Angelo Sasso was named as the drummer on the follow-up album “Victory”, but many fans and critics see this as a pseudonym for a drum computer .

The album was initially released on CD, with a limited edition first edition with a 3D cover available. Furthermore, a limited appeared Picture - LP in 12 ". Format in 2003 was the album beyond part one with" The Legendary Tales "titled 3CD box for the album together with the two successors in a digipack , but without booklet has been published.

As a tour for the album, only six appearances were completed in Germany and Switzerland in April 1998. The band Primal Fear accompanied this tour .

reception

After the release, the album received good reviews. Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard especially praised the sound of the production (" That's exactly how metal guitars have to sound! The same applies to the tirelessly driving drums [...]!"). On the other hand it was criticized that the album could not catch up with the album "Black Hand Inn" from 1994. In retrospect, however, the album was described in Rock Hard as "a bit weaker for running-wild conditions".

In the German album charts, “The Rivalry” reached number 19 and thus had the highest position of a Running Wild album until the release of “ Shadowmaker ” in 2011. It stayed in the top 100 for a total of five weeks.

The 2006 best-of album "Best of Adrian", which only contains material from the time of Running Wild on GUN Records, includes "The Rivalry", "Firebreather", "Kiss of Death" and "Ballad of William Kidd." “Contained four songs on the album.

In 2006 the album gave the name to a tribute compilation called "The Revivalry".
