The Rohde Shoes GmbH (formerly Erich Rohde GmbH ) is a German shoe manufacturer with headquarters in Schwalmstadt in the Schwalm-Eder district in Hesse . As a Rohde Group , it operates internationally and is particularly active in Central Europe.

history

In 1862 the Rohde tannery was founded in Guben (Brandenburg). In 1926 company founder Erich Rohde took over the shoe factory that had emerged from this tannery . In 1939, the Guben slipper factory Erich Rohde received the Gaudiplom for excellent performance.

During the Second World War , Rohde had lost two shoe factories. In 1947 Rohde used residual materials to manufacture shoes - the upper consisted of old Wehrmacht uniforms, the upper made of cot material and the soles of car tires.

From 1948, Rohde in Lower Saxony started rebuilding the company with some displaced persons . The company, which had meanwhile been reorganized into Erich Rohde KG , set up its first own production facility . The following year, the Ascherode site was opened up in what is now Schwalmstadt near Ziegenhain . Another factory was built in Bad Kreuznach in the early 1950s . With a daily production of over 1,700 pairs of shoes, the company employed around 200 people.

In the 1960s, Rohde expanded and set up branches in Germany ( Immichenhain , Borken and Schrecksbach ) and Austria ( Hallein ), followed by production facilities in Portugal (1975, Santa Maria da Feira) and Eastern Europe. In 1965 Erich Rohde, who gave the company its name, died. Son-in-law Friedrich W. Schmitt, the sole shareholder of the KG, takes over the company. In the 1980s, Rohde gradually integrated computer technology into its production facilities, thereby accelerating the manufacturing process. With the takeover of the license for the shoe collection of the French lifestyle brand Daniel Hechter , Rohde expanded its product range in 1996 and benefited from the influence of the licensed brand on the core brand.

In 2003, under the management of Christoph Schmitt and Friedrich O. Schenk, Rohde had a total of around 164 million euros with a workforce of 3,180 (including around 2,300 in Portugal). In 2004, the company and 66 other medium-sized German and Austrian companies took part in a financing platform (PREPS 2004-2) in order to jointly finance themselves via the capital market with amounts of up to EUR 18 million per company. As a result, Rohde participated in other mezzanine financing (PREPS 2005-2 and CB Mezzcap I).

In 2005, Rohde employed a total of around 3,800 people within his group with a daily production of 38,000 pairs of shoes and an annual production of 8 million pairs of shoes. 45% of the annual production went to the European market outside Germany, 5% to overseas. At that time, Schwalmstadt had an automatically controlled high-bay warehouse with a capacity of around 500,000 pairs of shoes.

In 2007 Erich Rohde KG filed for bankruptcy . The then managing director and personally liable partner Friedrich Wilhelm Schmitt was investigated for fraud and the delay in bankruptcy . The sister company Alit-Werke Carl Schmitt GmbH & Co KG also filed for bankruptcy in 2007.

In 2008 Schmitt was sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment for fraud after he made a comprehensive confession and repaid 5 million euros of the total damage amount of 40 million euros. He had not enriched himself, but tried to save the ailing company. The company was acquired and restructured by Square Four Investments and Morgan Stanley . State aid has been requested. Almost a third of the workforce had to be laid off as part of the restructuring. Production sites in Austria and Portugal, the latter with almost 3,000 employees, were closed. Since then, the company has been run as a GmbH under new management . At the end of 2012, production in Schwalmstadt closed completely and was increasingly relocated abroad. On December 31, 2012, the collaboration between Rohde and Daniel Hechter ended after 15 years by mutual agreement. In future, there will be a focus on the Rohde brand. In 2012 the company opened a new showroom in the Hamburg ModeCentrum. In the future, production will mainly take place in Eastern Europe (e.g. Bosnia and Slovakia).

On October 28, 2016, an application was made to open insolvency proceedings. The bankruptcy proceedings were opened on January 1, 2017.

On March 9, 2017 it was announced that the company would be sold to the Italian Inblu Group.

Company structure and key figures

The managing directors in 2010 were Stephan Harmening and Oliver Kraxner. Harmening replaced the previous CEO Pierre Heurich in 2009 . This, coming from Sara Lee , had held his position since 2008 and left the company due to differing views on further development. Oliver Kraxner has been the sole managing director of the company since February 2011.

Erich Rohde GmbH had an average of 300 employees in 2009 and this year achieved sales of 59.7 million euros. The Rohde Group employed a further 97 people in five European and one Canadian subsidiaries. For 2009 she stated a turnover of 68.2 million euros, which includes the turnover of the GmbH.

In addition to acquisitions, Erich Rohde GmbH assembles around 20,000 shoes per day in its own production facilities in Schwalmstadt. According to their own account, it is one of the largest shoe manufacturers in Europe and sells over 4 million pairs of shoes a year, most of them in the slippers segment . Rohde shoes are available from 3,200 trading partners throughout Europe, and the company also has two factory outlets at the administrative headquarters in Schwalmstadt and in Borken in northern Hesse . The company has offices in the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and England. The collections of the licensed brand Daniel Hechter were distributed by 550 European trading partners.

Products

Erich Rohde GmbH sees itself as a family brand and carries models for women, men and children. Every year two new collections are brought onto the market, which in addition to street and leisure shoes also include evening shoes, sandals and slippers . The models are presented at the international shoe trade fairs GDS in Düsseldorf and Expo Riva in Riva del Garda .

In 1975, the protection of the word and word / figurative mark “ROHDE”, with the letter “O” backed by a black rectangle, followed for shoes, including “those with woven or knitted textile shafts, especially slippers and slippers” and footwear . In 1981 Rohde registered the "ROFLEX" word / figurative mark.
