Roland Gnaiger (born July 18, 1951 in Bregenz , Vorarlberg ) is an Austrian architect and emeritus university professor .

Life

Roland Gnaiger grew up in Bregenz and Bad Goisern . After graduating from the Higher Technical College in Krems , he studied from 1971 to 1977 with Ernst Plischke and Roland Rainer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and at the Technical University of Eindhoven . In 1979 he founded his own architecture office in Doren in the Bregenz Forest , which he relocated to Bregenz in the early 1990s. During this time he planned single-family houses, residential and leisure buildings, realized internationally published key buildings such as the school in Warth or the agricultural company Vetterhof in Lustenau and established himself as a key representative of Vorarlberg's architects .

Gnaiger became known to a broader public in the 1980s through his weekly program Plus-Minus (151 contributions) on the television program of Austrian radio . In it he dealt critically with building culture and thus helped Vorarlberg's contemporary architecture to attract increased attention among the population.

From 1996 to 2019 Gnaiger was professor and head of architecture training at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz . Under his leadership, programs were established there with the master’s degree in Überholz and the BASEhabitat workshop , which brought the university an international reputation.

Gnaiger was the initiator and chairman of the jury for the Austrian State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability . In addition, he was chairman of the advisory board of the Landluft association between 2000 and 2019 and during this time he headed the jury for the Baukulturgemeinde award .

Today Gnaiger is one of the most versatile and recognized architects in Austria. He realized numerous key buildings for the New Vorarlberger Building School and won the Austrian Builder Award four times . Through his numerous lectures, interviews, exhibition contributions and jury participation, he has also gained attention far beyond the architecture scene.
