Rolf Hinz (entomologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rolf Hinz (born April 3, 1916 in Emden ; † May 25, 1994 in Einbeck ) was a German senior graduate student and entomologist (insect researcher). He practiced profession and research area in Einbeck.

education and profession

Since 1935, Rolf Hinz has been studying natural sciences at the Universities of Halle , Freiburg and Göttingen for a higher teaching post . After completing labor and military service , he graduated in 1947. The following year he was accepted into the Lower Saxony secondary school service and practiced his profession at the Goethe Gymnasium in Einbeck until 1978 . He taught biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Scientific activity

Scientifically, he dealt mainly with the systematics and way of life of parasitic wasps and thus the parasites of numerous harmful insects . Very extensive breeding carried out by him showed the host-parasite relationships. He recognized early on that it must be possible to use these animals to naturally reduce the use of pesticides in agriculture and forestry.

A prerequisite for his long-term part-time work was a specific knowledge of the biology and taxonomy of these animals, which almost incidentally led to the fact that he discovered, described and named more than 50 new species and became a world-renowned connoisseur of ichneumonids . Accordingly, he has published numerous scientific papers since the mid-1950s and made his specific knowledge available to many colleagues, diploma and doctoral students altruistically through his determination and consultancy work. His relevant knowledge was based not least on extensive field research , for which he often took pupils with him to distant countries. A very extensive collection of parasitic wasps was automatically created. The latter received the Zoological State Collection in Munich as an inheritance.
