Rolls-Royce Corniche , named after the Corniche coastal road near Monaco , is a model name of the British manufacturer Rolls-Royce .

The Coupé and Drophead Coupé (Cabriolet) variants of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow were marketed under this name from 1971 to 1995 and the Rolls-Royce version of the Bentley Continental R from 2000 to 2002 .

At times there was a parallel model Bentley Corniche from the sister brand Bentley , which was renamed Bentley Continental in 1984 . A prototype based on the Bentley Mark V was named Corniche as early as 1939 , but it was no longer in series production because of the outbreak of war.

Corniche (1971–1987)

Rolls-Royce Corniche I.

The name Corniche was introduced in 1971 for the coupé and cabriolet versions of the Silver Shadow that had been manufactured since 1965 and 1967 respectively. Rolls-Royce officially called them Two Door Saloon, as they were similar in size to the four-door saloons. The vehicles were manufactured by the Rolls-Royce coachbuilder Mulliner Park Ward in London.

The Corniche Coupé was withdrawn from the range in 1982.

The Corniche had the company's regular V8 engine with an engine block made of an aluminum-silicon alloy ( Alusil ), aluminum cylinder heads and wet, cast-iron cylinder liners. 104.1 mm bore and 99.1 mm stroke resulted in a total displacement of 6750 cm³. Initially the engine was equipped with two SU carburettors, from 1975 with a Solex quadruple carburetor. From 1980 a Bosch injection was used.

The three-speed automatic, a Turbo Hydramatic 400, came from General Motors . The chassis had independent suspension all around and coil springs on the front and rear axles, as well as an automatic level control (manufactured by Rolls-Royce under a Citroën license without the pneumatic dampers), initially on all four, later only on the rear wheels. Disc brakes provided all-round deceleration, from 1972 in an internally ventilated design.

The wheelbase of 3042 mm was stretched to 3048 mm in 1974 and 3061 mm in 1979.

Corniche II (1988-1989)

In 1988, the model was developed from a facelift in Corniche II renamed. The chrome bumpers gave way to units made of aluminum and rubber, were delivered in the body color, as were the exterior mirrors. The radiator was made of aluminum, the oil was given its own oil cooler. ABS was now standard, airbags were not available. Other changes included new rims, new reversing lights next to the rear license plate, new seats and a revised dashboard. The visually most striking change is the continuous center tunnel.

Corniche III (1989-1993)

The Corniche III was presented at the Frankfurt IAA in autumn 1989. The only major innovation compared to the Corniche II were the standard airbags. The bumpers were no longer black, but painted in the same color as the car, and the chassis was improved. The dashboard and center console have been retouched in the interior.

Corniche IV (1993-1995)

In 1993 the Corniche IV was presented. After Mulliner Park Ward was closed, the cars were now manufactured in the main factory in Crewe. Instead of the plastic, a glass rear window was used, and the convertible top mechanism was revised so that manual locking was no longer necessary. In addition to driver and front passenger airbags, the standard equipment also included CFC- free automatic air conditioning.

The last 25 corniches made in 1995 were turbo-engineered and were officially called the Corniche S.

Corniche (2000-2002)

Rolls-Royce Corniche (2000-2002)

In January 2000, the plant presented a new Corniche convertible , the last new development before the takeover by BMW . It was powered by a turbocharged version of the 6.8-liter Rolls-Royce V8. Outwardly, it resembled the recently introduced Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph , but based on the Bentley Continental R . By August 2002, 374 copies of this convertible, which cost almost CHF 550,000 or US $ 360,000, were built.
