Romano Nieders (born January 20, 1934 in Graz ; † January 7, 2013 in Münster ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Nieders studied singing at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He made his debut as an opera singer in his hometown at the Graz Opera House . Nieders appeared there as bass, bass baritone and bass buffo in operas, but also in various operettas . In the 1964/65 season he sang Moret in the operetta Das Veilchen von Montmartre by Emmerich Kálmán alongside Dorit Hanak (as Veilchen) .

From 1966 to 1985 Nieders was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Munster Municipal Theaters . He then performed there, for example in the 1986/87 season, and as a guest until 1988. In Münster, Nieders sang mainly the serious bass subject, but also took on comical roles in operas (such as The Funny Wives of Windsor ) and in operettas ( One Night in Venice as Testaccio; The Begging Student ). In June 1968 he worked in Münster, alongside Martha Mödl , as a ballad singer in the German-language premiere of the opera Gloriana by Benjamin Britten . In the 1980s he sang Pater Guardian in Die Macht des Schicksals (premiere: October 1980), Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau in Der Rosenkavalier (premiere: December 1982), Landgraf Hermann in Tannhäuser (premiere: September 1983), the title role in Boris Godunow (premiere: December 1983), Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Seraglio (season 1983/84), Rocco in Fidelio (premiere: August 1984), Kaspar in Der Freischütz (premiere: November 1985) and most recently Komtur in Don Giovanni (Premiere: January 1988). Boris in particular was one of his brilliant roles. He was also successful in the 1984/85 season in the title role of the early Verdi opera Attila (premiere: December 1984); he "put himself and his martial high bass in scene [...] impressively as well as pleasantly". Nieders' repertoire comprised a total of around 100 roles.

In the 1979/80 season he took over the Crespel council at the Bremerhaven City Theater in a new production of Hoffmann's stories (premiere: February 1980, director: Peter Grisebach ) and showed his role as a “successful character study”. In the 1980/81 season he then made a guest appearance at the Bremerhaven City Theater as the "vocal" King Philip, who was "very superior in his overall performance ", in a new production of the Verdi opera Don Carlos (premiere: October 1981). In the 1981/82 season he also worked as Baron Ochs in a new production of Rosenkavalier (premiere: February 1982) at the Bremerhaven City Theater ; However, he put his portrayal too much as "coarse, hearty landed gentry clothes". In the 1983/84 season he also appeared as Baron Ochs at the Innsbruck State Theater . In the 1984/85 season he appeared at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice . He sang there, alongside Sylvia Sass as Grete, the Dr. Vigelius in the opera The distant sound . In the 1986/87 season he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in November 1986 as Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau in the opera Der Rosenkavalier .

Nieders has also appeared at the Cologne Opera , in Hamburg , the Bremen Theater , the State Theater Braunschweig , at the State Theater Innsbruck , at the Flanders Festival in Ghent , in Belgrade and Zagreb (1987, as Hunding in Die Walküre ). In March 1986 he sang the bass solo in the Verdi Requiem at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels . In February 1987 he sang the bass solo there in Rossini's Stabat Mater .

In 1988 Nieders withdrew from the opera stage due to a serious illness; he then lived in seclusion in Munster.
