Romeo Panciroli MCCI (born November 21, 1923 in Reggio nell'Emilia , Italy , † March 17, 2006 in Rome ) was a diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

After entering the order of the Comboni missionaries , the novitiate in Florence and the study of Catholic theology and philosophy in Verona , he received the sacrament of ordination on June 1, 1949 in Milan . In 1973 Pope Paul VI appointed him . as secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Social Communications to the Roman Curia . From 1976 to 1984 he was Director of the Press Office of the Holy See.

On November 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Noba and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Gambia and Liberia and Apostolic Delegate in Sierra Leone and Guinea . The episcopal ordination received his Bernardin Cardinal Gantin of the same year on December 16. After the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Guinea and the establishment of the Apostolic Nunciature for Guinea , he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio there on August 1, 1987, while retaining his other offices.

On March 18, 1992, John Paul II appointed him first as Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Iran and on February 1, 1994 there as Apostolic Nuncio.

When he reached the age limit of 75 years specified in the Codex Iuris Canonici , he offered the Pope his resignation, which John Paul II accepted in April 1999.
