The Rosenbrauerei Pößneck GmbH is a beer brewery in Thuringia . The company's headquarters are in Pößneck , the largest city in the Saale-Orla district . The brewery is family owned. In 2015, around 40 employees produced 51,300 hectoliters of beer and mixed beer drinks as well as 19,200 hl of non-alcoholic drinks. The beer is sold under the protected product name Rosenbräu .

Prehistory to the brewing industry in Pößneck

According to a document, around 120 citizens had a brewing license in 1445, that is, they poured their home- brewed produce at home until the building ran out. This custom lasted for over four centuries until 1850. An old city bill shows that Pößnecker beer was already being delivered to Weimar at that time . In 1589, the Pößneck city council had a new brewery and malt house built in Krautgasse , in which there was a well fed from the Mönchsquelle in the lower grove.

A brewing regulation issued by the Thuringian Landgrave Duke Friedrich Wilhelm for Pößneck dates from 1656 . It not only regulated the commercial sale of beer, but also gave the city the right to raise the so-called beer penny in times of need . In the beginning, this was mainly used to pay off war debts, later the income was also used to build roads and schools, renovate the town church and pay municipal officials. Said brewing regulations must obviously have proven themselves, because in 1657 the council of Gera requested a copy. Drinking beer was quite cheap in the Middle Ages. In 1649 the Maß cost three pfennigs, but 150 years later the price was already six pfennigs.

history

With the introduction of free competition in the brewing industry around 1850, every citizen could apply for the brewing right , and when complete freedom of trade came into effect in 1863, this led to the establishment of the brewery and malt house at the Rosenmühle in 1866 by Messrs Albert, Schilling and Walter.

After several changes of ownership, Eduard Schaar and Richard Wagner became tenants of the brewery in 1883. In 1895 the company became the sole property of Richard Wagner.

"To the Ed. Schaar in Pößneck has been entered on sheet 167 of the commercial register today that the farmer Paul Schaar as a partner on September 30th. J. and that the company will be continued unchanged by the previous shareholder Richard Wagner as the sole owner. "

Newspaper documents show that the name rose brewery probably originated in the early 1890s. A full-page advertisement in the Pößnecker Zeitung from February 3, 1896 already said Richard Wagner, Rosenbrauerei . At the turn of the century, the Pößnecker brewery was producing an average of 33,000 hectoliters of beer.

In 1910 Richard Wagner expanded the company by integrating the Bavariabrauerei; In 1923, the Bergschlößchen brewery in Köstitz was finally taken over. At the "peak" of inflation - a glass of beer cost 52 billion Reichsmarks on November 15, 1923  - Kurt Wagner took over his father's company as the sole owner. At this time, rose beer began to be exported by rail to a number of large German cities, including Leipzig . In 1928 a bottle filling plant and a barrel washing machine were bought, in the same year the storage cellar was lowered and a little later expanded by 20 Zeppelin tanks.

Conversion to a GmbH

Label from the 1930s

In 1930 the rose brewery Pößneck Richard Wagner was converted into a GmbH . In the same year, the construction of the refrigerated ship and the conversion of the office began. Between 1931 and 1934, among other things, a locksmith's shop was built, the fermentation cellar was rebuilt, the bottle washer was put into operation and the vehicle fleet was expanded and modernized. In addition, the rebuilding of the Picherei as well as a carpenter's workshop for barrel production and their repair took place.

In 1936 the bottle cellar and the technical office were built, and the Schalander was inaugurated.

In 1938 a well was drilled near Hütten because of the increased need for brewing water. On May 5, 1939, the extraction of naturally pure water from a depth of 110.5 meters began. A few days later, an appraisal from the Technical and Scientific Institute confirms “the water as very soft natural water, which is equivalent to the brewing water of the civil brewery in Pilsen”.

Between 1931 and 1941 the construction of a malt grist, a brewhouse, a boiler house and a well house followed. In 1940 a steam engine with a coupled three-phase generator was installed, the high-pressure steam was used to generate electricity and the exhaust steam to boil the wort. The electricity generated by steam was not only used for production, but also partly fed into the public grid.

Despite the rationing of raw materials and the imposed restrictions on local gastronomy, the rose brewery's beer output in the war years of 1943/44 was over 51,000 hectoliters.

In July 1945 Richard Wagner took over the management of the company, striving to bring production to pre-war levels. As early as 1948/49, Richard Wagner was initially locked out and later imprisoned for flimsy reasons. Although he was finally acquitted, Richard Wagner was persecuted again in early 1950 but was able to flee to western Germany. In March 1950, the rose brewery was initially placed under fiduciary management and then transferred to public ownership.

Conversion to VEB

Label of the VEB Rosenbrauerei

On June 7th, 1951, the rose brewery became “ Volkseigener Betrieb (VEB)” under the management of VVB Südwest Erfurt .

In the following years, the expansion and reconstruction of individual production sections took place, the fermentation cellar and the cooling units were renewed, a carbon dioxide recovery system and a bottle filling system were installed. In 1973, 1.5 million marks were invested in a water pipe that led from the well house built in 1940 to the brewery.

In 1961 the rose brewery was "appointed" as the product group leader for the breweries in the Gera district , and from 1969 onwards the main plant of the Gera beverage combine was located in Pößneck. In the 1970s and 1980s, the rose brewery's annual output is increased to up to 115,000 hectoliters of non-alcoholic beverages. In addition to “Rosen-Pils”, “Rosen-Vollbier” and “Rosen-Bock”, “ Karena -Limonade” and “ Selterswasser ” are among the best-known products among the non-alcoholic drinks .

In 1974 the Neustadt brewery was incorporated into the Rosenbrauerei as a part of the business. With the relocation of the combine headquarters to Bad Köstritz in 1987 , the Pößnecker rose brewery functions as an independent company. As early as 1982 the delivery area was fixed at a 45 km radius around Pößneck. At times, the annual output of both breweries rose to 160,000 hectoliters of beer and 62,000 hectoliters of non-alcoholic beverages . In the 1980s, 165 people were employed in the rose brewery.

Reprivatisation

The brewery premises of the Rosenbrauerei in Pößneck in 1999

Nicolaus Wagner, great-grandson of the co-founder of the rose brewery Pößneck, took over the management of the rose brewery on site in May 1991 and thus continued a 130-year family tradition after the forced break. In the same year a court of cassation overturned the judgment on alleged economic offenses of his father, which opened the way to re-privatization.

Investments in the double-digit millions were necessary for the renovation of the facilities and the modernization of the technology. In 1992/93 numerous buildings were renovated and a new filter system installed. The brewhouse was completely reconstructed and a bottling plant with an hourly capacity of 24,000 bottles was put into operation. A barrel filling plant was added a little later. The storage cellar, which is also new, is equipped with six tanks with a capacity of 1000 hectoliters each.

The rehabilitation of the sewage network in connection with a pre-treatment plant made a significant contribution to environmental protection , in 1991 the spring was awarded the title of natural mineral water . The brewery brewed around 75,000 hectoliters of beer in 1993, making it one of the larger ones in Thuringia. The official tapping ceremony for the Black Rose took place in November, thus expanding the range of drinks at the rose brewery.

The mineral water Thuringian Heidequell has been on offer since 1991. The water from the brewery's own spring is also used for this product. The natural mineral water , which is characterized by its low sodium content and freedom from nitrates , is particularly suitable for the production of high quality non-alcoholic beverages and for the preparation of baby food.

In 1996, the Rosenbrauerei launched the Black Tiger , the first German black beer - Radler .

On January 3, 2002, the Rosenbrauerei took over the Weimar-Ehringsdorf brewery in a foreclosure auction . After investments of 1.3 million euros, brewing has been taking place at this location again since 2003.

Fire on November 20, 2009

Due to a technical defect on a computer screen, a fire broke out in the finished goods warehouse on November 20, 2009 at around 3 a.m. A computer, seven barrels and a piece of conveyor belt were destroyed. The bigger problems, however, turned out to be soot and stench, which stuck to the filling technology in the neighboring hall and around 1400 pallets of finished goods.

The damage was put at over a million euros. Due to the build-up of soot, around 560,000 bottles of beer and 360,000 bottles of non-alcoholic soft drinks had to be destroyed. For some time, fresh Pößnecker beer was transported by tanker to the Bürgerliches Brauhaus Saalfeld to be bottled there.

During the renovation work, a larger archive folder was discovered in a cavity, which contained, among other things, architectural documents of the brewery.
